Kindergarten is reading different versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff looking for what is the same and what is different in each one. Paul Galdone's classic is the pretty straight forward version, while Jerry Pinkney's version offers lessons in bravery and kindness. Hopefully my booming troll voice hasn't scared my kindergarten crew away from the library!

Book recommendations from our 5th & 6th graders are now on display throughout the library! Students needed to briefly summarize their book, but more importantly they needed to give their reason why. The recommendations range from realistic fiction to fantasy to graphic novels; and even the beloved Elephant & Piggie get a few mentions.

We are starting to read this year's Red Clover books. Red Clover is a kids' choice award in the state of Vermont. Students all over the state in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade read ten nominated books during the school year and vote for thier favorite in the spring. This year's list has a little bit of everything from non-fiction & biographies to fanciful & heartwarming.
This year students in 1st & 2nd grade are keeping a Red Clover "Passport" to log which books we have read and how many stars we have give it. Students in 3rd & 4th grade are making Google Slideshows to keep a running record of the books as we read them.

Kindergarten read a delightful story about being a good friend and inclusion. We then came up with ideas about what animal we would invite to a fun filled party!

Students in Mr. Greenleaf's 5th & 6th grade had to use thier skills in problem solving and teamwork to figure out how to unlock a series of locks. Breakout EDU challenges students be creative and critical thinkers while collaborating and communicating with thier team all under the pressure of a countdown timer. Breakout games also promote growth in Social Emotional skills while students navigate how to be a good teammate, make responsible decisions, and show grit and determination.

Students are back in the library!!!
After a year of a necessary hiatus from students coming into the library I am thrilled that we get to use it this year for the great space that the library can be.
These last few weeks we have been focusing on getting back to the basics: how to find great books, how to take care of them, and of course how to enjoy them. Below are a few of the read-a-louds we have used to help us think and talk about taking care of our library.
Our older students are writing their own book reviews to encourage each other to stretch their reading appetite and perhaps discover something new to read too! Putting their writing skills on display adds that much needed student voice back into the library.
It has been a wonderful few weeks and while I too have a good stack of library books at home, it is important to the success of our library that borrowed books come back on a regular basis. Last year’s library schedule tilted what regular classes looked like, but this year our students are back to having a library class once a week, every week! Please help your child(ren) remember to bring back their books once they are finished reading/enjoying them so that other students can have the chance to enjoy all that our collection has to offer.
Finally, but of equal importance are the conversations we are having around digital citizenship. Thank you for signing off on the HUUSD Acceptable Use Agreement with your children, but as you know this is really just the first step. Throughout the year we will be having discussions and doing activities about digital citizenship so that we can help our students navigate the awesomeness of the internet by being internet awesome.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Be well,
Eric Mongeon
