A mental health clinician is a licensed mental health professional who provides diagnostic assessment and treatment to adults, children, adolescents, and their families.
In the school setting, treatment is designed using a school social work model and individualized to each student. Services may include individual, group or family counseling, referrals to community resources and providers, collaboration and consultation with school staff, and more as indicated by individual needs.
The mental health clinician also plays a role in promoting the health and wellness of all students and reducing the stigma associated with mental health care through a variety of activities and learning opportunities.
Benefits of school based mental health services may include improved self-esteem, greater access to care, decreased interruptions in learning, increased quality of everyday life and relationships, strengthening emotion identification, and increased self-awareness.
