It was a clean sweep for the HMS Advanced Bands at this year's UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation. Both the HMS Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble earned Superior ratings in Concert and in Sight Reading performance. This is the first time in HMS history that all groups earned a Sweepstakes at UIL, making this year's accomplishments feel extra special.
Students spent 12 weeks from January to the first of April focused on three musical selections, first learning to play correct notes and rhythms, then adding articulations, dynamics, and finally phrasing and nuance to demonstrate their understanding of each piece. They also practiced their reading skills during Enrichment time twice each week to prepare.
Judges praised the groups for their musical understanding, tone, balance, and professionalism. The bands were also commended for their discipline and display of clear procedures. We are very proud of the work our HMS Bandies put into honing their craft and building themselves each day.
