MICHAEL REY was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, but spent his formative years in Albuquerque and El Paso before moving to Austin at the age of 10. He attended Murchison Middle School, where he first picked up the trumpet, and went on to graduate from Anderson High School as a 2 year all-stater (Go Trojans!). Mr. Rey then received a full scholarship to pursue Music Education at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches (Go Jacks!) before moving back to the Austin area. He worked as an assistant band director at McNeil High School and Forbes Middle School while cutting his teeth in the world of performance, playing across Texas at many legendary venues, to include ACL Moody Theatre, Gruene Hall, the Long Center and the Elephant Room. Mr. Rey pivoted to teaching private lessons, which allowed him the freedom to tour and record with such acts as Ruben Ramos, Rick Treviño, Brown Out, Grupo Fantasma, Salvador and the Nightowls. He is a founding member of the Fresh-2-Def horn trio and currently plays with The Pictures and Stella and the Hey Dudes alongside his wife, who is also a musician. They have 3 kids-their oldest daughter just finished her first year at Texas State (an active member of the Bobcat Band), their middle son is wrapping up his junior year at Cedar Ridge playing on the varsity golf team, and their youngest daughter, who is a 2nd grader at Caldwell Elementary, is already an award-winning participant in the competitive dance world!
When he’s not playing trumpet, or watching his kids pursue their passions, Mr. Rey can be found watching football (Go Cowboys!), riding his bike, hanging at the pool or catching a movie at Flix!
