Advisors Information

Satisfactory academic progress

The SAP affects all federal, state, and most forms of need-based institutional aid. To be eligible for financial aid, a student must meet specific minimum thresholds.

SAP is reviewed at the end of all semesters. If a student drops below the minimum SAP requirements, they are allowed a warning term to raise their GPA.

College level loans

Direct Subsidized Loans:

They are available to undergraduate students with financial need, and are enrolled in at least half time (6 credits). The U.S. department of Education pays the interest on a Subsidized Loan.

Direct Unsubsidized Loans:

They are available to undergraduate and graduate students. There is no requirement to demonstrate financial need. The student s responsible for paying the interest on an Unsubsidized Loan.

Direct PLUS Loans:

Parents of students, and some graduate students can apply for a PLUS Loan. If a parent is denied a Parent PLUS Loan, the student must request that the additional Unsubsidized Loan funds be added to their award.

To apply for a PLUS Loan, visit www.studentloans.gov.

Outside Loans:

There are private loans that are not associated with the Federal Direct Loan programs, and also require credit checks and most often a co-borrower. To look at alternative loan options, please use our free tool at www.elmselect.com.

How aid is calculated

A student's financial need is determined by the following basic formula:

Cost of Attendance

- (minus) Expected Family Contribution

- (minus) Outside Assistance

________________________________________

= (equals) Financial Need

Once the financial need is determined, the Office of Financial Aid will award as much aid as possible to fill the student's need. The exact award may vary due to availability of funds as well as deadline requirements.
