Topic: Fourier Analysis and Higher-Order Autocorrelations
Project Proposal: We will start with the discrete Fourier transform. Then, we will learn enough point-set topology to understand topological groups, and see how the more general Fourier transform arises naturally from the same considerations as in the discrete case. Time permitting, we will apply the tools and techniques of Fourier analysis to higher-order autocorrelations, a type of statistic arising from X-ray imaging (and particularly crystallography).
