Keyboarding proficiently is a necessary skill for all students living in the 21st Century. Keyboarding is not a skill students will naturally develop, so it is important that time is dedicated to structured practice.
Students in K-2nd can begin learning about left/right orientation on a keyboard as well as practicing with home row finger placement. If students have received instruction and have developed good habits starting in K-1st, they may be ready for actual home row instruction in 2nd grade.
Students in 3rd- 12th grade should develop their keyboarding skills so by the end of 12th grade they reach at least 60 words per minute. There are a myriad of free and paid options for keyboarding practice. It is recommended that students first use software and teacher guidance that explicitly teaches and reinforces proper finger placement and keystrokes before students use apps which encourage speed (e.g. Nitrotype). This is to ensure students develop the motor memory and accuracy for keystrokes before attempting to gain speed.
