What is Advisory?

Advisory is exactly what it sounds like: advice. It is an opportunity for teachers to create and strengthen relationships with students by giving students advice about the world around them and about how to be successful.

Advisories have 4 main goals:

  • To help advisees reflect upon and monitor their academic progress through a formal conferencing structure
  • To develop and maintain relationships between and among advisees and the adviser
  • To help advisees identify and develop the necessary attitudes, behaviors, and skills to succeed in school, college and life
  • To provide advisees with the resources and information necessary to make thoughtful decisions about the future

29Aug18 Advisory

Advisories are presented as Google Slides that leadership students can navigate and "teach." The hope is that this will give teachers an opportunity to connect with students and check in with things like grades, attendance, life in general -- things that are typically considered outside of the content area.

Please keep in mind that leadership students are still students and will need teacher assistance in successfully leading an advisory. You will likely be "co-teaching" with a leadership student for several weeks before they take over the lessons.
