1982 - the Hawarden Area School library combined with the Hawarden Public library in the newly opened school library building. The Hawarden Community Library Committee was formed to liaise with Hawarden Area School and run the community element of the library. This included raising money to buy books and other items, and organising community volunteers to help in the library.
1993 - the Hurunui District Library was created and opened in Amberley.
1996 - a District Library librarian was appointed to run the community element of our library. The library was also computerised.
The Hurunui District Library is based in the Hurunui Memorial Library in Amberley, with branches in Cheviot, Culverden, Greta Valley, Hanmer Springs, Hawarden, Leithfield, Omihi and Waiau. The Culverden, Hawarden & Greta Valley libraries are school-community libraries
Members are able to borrow from, and return items to, any Hurunui library.
Items from one library can be delivered (free) to any other library. It's all part of the service!
There are a wide range of e-resources available. We have a computer and printer for public use through National Library's APNK service.
Hurunui District Library provides free Wi-Fi: at Hawarden we can provide access through the school Wi-Fi network with a free password, just ask in our Library.

The mural was created by students of Hawarden Area School in 1990 and 1991, under the guidance of art teacher Shelley France, as a project to celebrate the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of New Zealand in 1990.
The Moa and Haast eagle were carved by student David Holland.
The official opening took place in September 1991.
The mural depicted the journey of the Hurunui River from the mountains to the sea.
The garden is planted with native flora. There may even be some native fauna lurking in there!
After being restored once, the mural gradually deteriorated. After 30 years and 3 months, in January 2022, as part of the school repainting programme, it was removed.
