Welcome!

Welcome AS 7.pdf

Welcome to my science website!

Here, I will share some of the things I am learning in 8th grade science. Our monthly goals for science will also be described. The goal for August and September was curiosity. Activities that we did for this were our Wonder Journals, the Hungry Hungry Sphero challenge, water quality testing, evaluating article authenticity, the cicada lab, and a microscopy lab. If I had to decide on a favorite, I'd have to choose the water quality testing because it was nice to go outside when we usually don't.

Updates for October, November, and December

During these months, we have done a number of things. Projects-wise, I have completed a book on Ohio's Geology, a sketchnote on plate tectonics and Earth's age, an animation on how Earth and the solar system was formed, and a plate tectonics poster, which I have not yet finished. I have been really enjoying the projects we do, and hope they will be this enjoyable in the future! Recently, we also did an engineering design challenge, where we had to build an earthquake safe building. I have to say, mine failed miserably (and quite hilariously). Although my building skills may not be the best, my quiz scores are fabulous! I got 100% on almost all of my quizzes, and I'm proud of that. I'm not doing to good in my time management, though. I tend to go really slow with projects, which is why I still haven't finished the plate tectonics poster. I hope to work on that in the future, but besides that, I'm doing pretty okay.

Updates for January, February, and March

There have been many things we did during these months. We learned about Newton's Laws, we build a paper ball launcher (very fun!), I did an experiment about what changes the number of swings in a pendulum, a sketchnote about electricity, and so many other things and experiments. I have to say, my favorite of the experiments so far has to be the Van de Graaff generator. We held our hands on it while it worked and when we took our hands off, we went and shocked other people. It was very fun! More recently, we made a book on Book Creator about electricity and magnetism, where we did a bunch of tests and research on electricity and magnets. It wasn't my favorite thing, but it was definitely better than some worksheets.

Updates for April and May

Throughout April and May, our class has learned and achieved many things. I was finally able to understand genetics and punnett squares with the Alien Genetics Gizmo along with the punnett square practice days we were given. We also did a project on the evolution of Rock Pocket mice, which I made a children's book on. Along with that, I also made a water quality infographic about Huron's waters' turbidity.

Final Thoughts on 8th Grade Science

Overall, I enjoyed science this year. We did so many labs compared to any other year, which makes it stand out from the rest. I certainly enjoyed it more because of this. I think this year I enjoyed the water quality testing that we occasionally did. It allowed us time to go outside and get a breath of fresh air while also learning something about Lake Erie, which was very refreshing compared to other classes. My least favorite thing about this year would have to be the Gizmos we would get for homework. They weren't hard, but they took a long time to do (at least for me), and that wasn't something I particularly enjoyed. In the future, I hope to learn more regarding chemicals, elements, and their reactions to each other in future science classes. This year was a good year and I hope to have many more like it in the future.
