Where I was: When I first began the process of updating my online social work course using Universal Design for Learning (UDL), I was admittedly quite ignorant and naïve about the technologies available. I understood the importance of accessibility and engagement in an online learning environment, but I lacked the knowledge of how to effectively implement tools that could make the course more inclusive and interactive. At that time, my approach to online teaching was fairly traditional, relying heavily on text-based materials and standard assessments.
Where I am: As I dove deeper into research throughout this course, listened to my peers, and explored the principles of UDL, my eyes were opened to a wide range of resources and strategies that could enhance student learning. I discovered new ways to present content, allowing for multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression. I also became more aware of the importance of designing a course that accommodates diverse learning styles and abilities. The process challenged me to rethink how I structured my course and encouraged me to experiment with different digital tools to foster a more dynamic and student-centered learning experience.
Where I am Going: Looking ahead, I am committed to incorporating more diverse methods for students to demonstrate their competency, ensuring that they have options beyond traditional written assignments. I plan to use the Backward Design method when developing new courses and even to reflect on my current courses. I would like to clearly state the objective for each week’s module for students to understand WHY I am including the material for that week. I want to create opportunities for students to engage with one another in meaningful ways, whether through discussion forums, collaborative projects, or interactive multimedia tools. I really like the use of video and hope to provide opportunities for my students to share via video. Additionally, I aim to enhance the feedback I provide by utilizing different platforms that allow for richer, more personalized communication. My goal is to create an online learning environment that is not only accessible but also engaging, supportive, and empowering for all my students.
This course has been challenging, but quite eye opening and I am excited to continue learning and refining my approach. I know I still have a lot to learn! While I started with limited knowledge, I now have a deeper appreciation for the power of technology in my online classroom and the impact that intentional course design can have on how students engage with the material, one another, and me.
