We are so much looking forward to seeing everyone, and welcoming you to our spring events, such as; Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties & the Constitution in January, HSU Authors Celebration in February, and IdeaFest in May.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the Library again, and we are here for you!  See the Library Directory for details.

Virtual Room to Read: Featuring HathiTrust

By Victoria Bruner

July 22, 2021

Looking to read some of the materials held by the HSU Library before we open? HathiTrust is an eBook platform that is available to HSU students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Until January 2022, if access to our HSU Library books stacks is unavailable, enjoy this great service for free! Since March, there have been 154 uses of materials on HathiTrust. Folks can find great reading options for the summer, and course materials to prepare for the fall semester.

Currently, a team of students employed at the HSU Library are combing through the HSU Bookstore list and cross-checking if materials are available through HathiTrust. They have almost 600 book titles to check! Some books that are needed for Fall 2021 courses which are on HathiTrust include: The Publication Manual of APA, Operating Systems Principles,Campbell Biology, and Probability Concepts in Engineering to name a few. To purchase a physical version of these course materials would be a combined total of $780--you have access to these eBooks for free!

Top three tips for using HathiTrust

You can always increase your checkout time by being active on the eBook page. Watch the search process, step by step here: Learn How to Use HathiTrust for Electronic Access to HSU Titles (video length 00:01:12)

What’s 4 Summer?

by Victoria Bruner

July 8, 2021

At L4HSU (LifeLong Learning Lounge) we have a plethora of possibilities for people this summer! L4HSU are free workshops designed to foster connections, dialogue, and professional & personal growth for students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community. Past events have included gardening, book circles, film screenings, technology trainings, racial equity workshops, and games. All are welcome to participate! This summer’s theme is Building Bridges & Connecting Communities, and events will run through August 14th, 2021.

There are nearly 40 workshops and talks that folks can participate in this summer. Check the calendar and register for workshops as new events are added. While attending L4HSU workshops this summer, I learned about the importance of creating art using your imagination and the nature around you, thanks to the awesome guidance of Julie Artemov and Art Remedy Time. The folks at UC Master Gardeners of Humboldt & Del Norte Counties (University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners) demonstrated how using a jeweler's lens can help identify critters and manage the overall health of a garden.

Dr. Christina Hsu Accomando’s workshop The Value of Critical Race Theory During Pandemic, Protest & Backlash, featured a CRGS 108 Spotify playlist curated by students for their Spring 2021 final project. Cyril Oberlander encouraged participants to search for cool places near them in a demonstration of how reviews on Google matter. He highlighted the project Discovering Humboldt: Getting Humboldt County on the Map & Social Media

If you are interested in facilitating your own workshop, submit an L4HSU proposal by July 23rd. For more information visit our website, or contact the planning team at L4HSU@humboldt.edu.
