As teachers, we can empower students to be successful in their internship experiences and beyond high school by emphasizing that the skills needed for success in the real world are the same skills utilized for success in each of our classes. Skills such as communication, collaboration and leadership are essential for student success. These skills are summarized in Humble ISD's Portrait of a Graduate.

Communication in Your Classroom
The need for students to both listen effectively and to share information clearly about themselves, their knowledge, their abilities, and their beliefs is essential to success in an internship or career. Communication of this nature can be in verbal, hand-written or digital form, but does not often come naturally to all students.
The need for students to both listen effectively and to share information clearly about themselves, their knowledge, their abilities, and their beliefs is essential to success in an internship or career. Communication of this nature can be in verbal, hand-written or digital form, but does not often come naturally to all students.
As teachers we can allow students to build these skills in any class in non-threatening ways using communication routines. These routines can start as general, non-content specific routines so that students can understand the process and practice their communication skills. Then the routines could and should transition to content-based routines.
