This course focuses on the use of ideational grammatical metaphors in academic discourse, including both experiential and logical metaphors. The course will first provide a foundational understanding of grammatical metaphors in SFL theory (e.g. Halliday, 1985; Halliday & Matthiessen, 1999; Martin, 2008); it then offers workshops on analysing grammatical metaphors in academic texts. The identification of grammatical metaphors draws on the most recent development of ideational discourse semantics (Hao, 2020). With this framework, the participants will be supported to recognise grammatical metaphors and ‘nominalisations’ as two distinctive linguistic phenomena. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to develop a systematic way of recognising what is (and is not) a grammatical metaphor and have a clear distinction among various kinds of ‘nominalisations’ that construe different ideational discourse semantic meanings.

Intended audience

Research students who are interested in analysing academic discourse in English from an SFL perspective. It would be ideal if they have some knowledge about basic SFL concepts (e.g. stratification; metafunction; genre and register).

La LSF es considerada una de las teorías más reconocidas para el estudio del lenguaje en contexto y el análisis textual. Esta tradición concibe al lenguaje como un sistema de opciones e indaga cómo estas opciones interactúan con los distintos contextos comunicativos. Este curso propone un recorrido por los principios teóricos fundamentales de la LSF para luego explorar las distintas maneras en que las opciones sistémicas se manifiestan en los textos. Para las actividades prácticas se trabajará con textos auténticos; se espera que el análisis textual permita reflexionar acerca de las formas en que se utiliza el lenguaje en diferentes situaciones y que los asistentes consoliden el manejo del metalenguaje. Finalmente, se hará referencia a las aplicaciones pedagógicas de la perspectiva sistémico funcional, con especial atención a propuestas de enseñanza de la lectura y la escritura en diversos contextos.

El curso está orientado a docentes, investigadores, alumnos de grado y posgrado y público general interesado en la LSF y su aplicación a la enseñanza o investigación de la lengua española y/o de lenguas extranjeras, sin conocimientos previos o con conocimientos básicos.

The aim of this short course is to build on participants’ knowledge about English phonology and to integrate it to the analysis of oral language. The meanings associated with intonation have been frequently described on the basis of isolated statements and these descriptions often do not correspond to the meanings at risk in situated discourse. In this course we will explore phonology at discourse level by analyzing the projection of interpersonal and textual meanings realized by prosodic choices, paralinguistic features and other linguistic and extra-linguistic resources. The course takes a very practical approach and is based on theoretical concepts within the frameworks of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and Discourse Intonation (DI).

We will present a brief description of the SFL and DI phonological systems and will work with authentic texts to explore the meanings of the phonological resources in relation to the other language strata and to the context.

English language teachers and teacher educators, students at an advanced level of English.
