Dear Parents / Carers,

As we come to the end of another busy and successful module, I am incredibly proud to share a significant milestone in our academy’s journey. Leigh Academy Hugh Christie has now been formally authorised as an International Baccalaureate World School, delivering the Middle Years Programme across Years 7, 8 and 9. This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to providing a high-quality, ambitious education that equips our young people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed in an ever-changing world. The IB framework strengthens critical thinking, creativity, reflection and global awareness, ensuring our students benefit from a curriculum often associated with selective and independent education, right here in our local community.

This module has been exceptionally busy and rich in opportunity beyond the classroom. Students have represented the academy with pride at the Tonbridge Remembrance event, visited Parliament to celebrate National Parliament Week and deepen their understanding of democracy, and engaged enthusiastically through our Government and Politics Club. Visits to the Royal Courts of Justice and the Supreme Court are just a few of the many highlights showcased in this newsletter, demonstrating our commitment to broadening horizons and enriching learning experiences.

I am also delighted by the continued growth of our rewards and recognition programme. Over 100,000 IB Merit Points have already been issued this academic year, alongside the introduction of our Active Participant Golden Ticket, celebrating positive engagement and contribution. Students and staff are thoroughly enjoying recognising these achievements through our VIP S-Elfie Experience, which has brought a wonderful sense of celebration across the academy.

Congratulations to our Year 11 and Year 13 students for successfully completing their first round of mock examinations. They approached this period with maturity, focus and resilience, and are making strong progress as they prepare for their final examinations. We have also been pleased to host a number of Sixth Form VIP Experience Days for our current Year 11 students, offering a real insight into life in our Sixth Form and the comprehensive curriculum we provide to support future success. Thank you to those who have already submitted their applications - please do so as soon as possible, and do not hesitate to contact us if you require any support.

We are officially an IB MYP World School!

Giving Back This Christmas

Last week, our Lighthouse students and staff delivered Christmas hampers to local frontline workers, including the team at Tonbridge Police Station and Tonbridge Fire and Rescue Service, as a small thank you for the vital work they do to keep our community safe and supported.

This is a much valued tradition led by The Lighthouse team and made fully from student donations; we are incredibly proud of our students for the care, generosity and thought they show. Taking time to give back to those who support others, particularly during the busy Christmas period, reflects the strong sense of community and empathy our students continue to demonstrate.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in helping make this initiative possible and for representing Leigh Academy Hugh Christie so positively within our local community.

Remembering Together

On Sunday 9 November, students and staff from Leigh Academy Hugh Christie took part in the Tonbridge Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service. The parade began at Tonbridge Castle before processing through the town to the Tonbridge Memorial Garden, where the service was held.

Our students represented the academy with real dignity and respect, conducting themselves with maturity throughout the morning. Alongside this, Austin, Amber, Harrison and Joseph also represented the academy extremely well and are thanked for their respectful and positive contribution. A special mention goes to Sophie and Nokutenda, who laid a wreath on behalf of the academy in honour of those who have served and sacrificed.

We were also very proud of Archie, Joey, Meegain and Keira, members of the local Cadet Force, who spent the day before the service selling poppies in Tonbridge High Street in support of the Royal British Legion. Their commitment and community spirit were wonderful examples of service in action.

Following the service, students had the opportunity to speak with our local MP, Tom Tugendhat, reflecting together on the continued importance of remembrance within our local community.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday held particular significance, as 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe, making it an especially meaningful moment to pause, remember and give thanks.

Bringing Democracy to Life

National Parliament Week

As part of National Parliament Week, students at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie have been learning about democracy, government and active citizenship both in and beyond the classroom. This included a whole academy assembly led by Mr Blackwell, which explored Fundamental British Values with a focus on democracy, how decisions are made in the UK and why it is important for young people to be informed, balanced and critical thinkers.

Alongside this, Year 10 students and one very enthusiastic Year 8 took part in a visit to the Houses of Parliament on 18 November. Students toured the Palace of Westminster and joined the Power of Petitions workshop, linking directly to their recent PSHRE learning on Government and Politics. They explored how petitions work, why they matter and how young people can use them to have their voices heard, helping to bring classroom learning to life. A quick stop outside Number 10 Downing Street was a real highlight of the day.

We have also been impressed by the continued growth of our Government and Politics Club, where students have met with and questioned local councillors from different political parties.

Their thoughtful discussions around local and national issues show a genuine interest in civic responsibility and reflect our commitment to developing confident, responsible and active citizens.

Visit to the Royal Courts of Justice and the Supreme Court

On the 8th December, Year 12 Law students spent an inspiring day in London this week, visiting both the Royal Courts of Justice and the UK Supreme Court.

At the Royal Courts of Justice, students took part in a highly engaging mock trial, adopting a range of legal roles including jurors, witnesses, solicitors, barristers and judges. Working collaboratively, they examined evidence, debated key issues and reached a verdict, gaining valuable insight into how legal cases are handled in practice.

The visit continued with a guided tour of the Supreme Court, where students explored the courtrooms and learned more about the court’s vital role within the UK justice system. Students represented the academy exceptionally well throughout the day, showing maturity, curiosity and enthusiasm, making the visit both meaningful and memorable.

Recognising Success

Our students have been widely recognised this term for consistently demonstrating the IB Learner Profile in their day to day learning.

The most recognised qualities were Principled in Angelou and Coe and Inquirer in Attenborough, highlighting the strong sense of responsibility and curiosity shown across the academy.

Furthermore, Riley has been instrumental in the organisation of the Christmas hampers for those who will be working on Christmas Day, demonstrating initiative and a commendable commitment to supporting others.

Attenborough College would like to celebrate Kaiden for his truly outstanding conduct so far this year! Achieving an impressive total of 205 merit points so far, alongside maintaining 0 behaviour points and a perfect 100% attendance, is a testament to his dedication. Kaiden clearly upholds the high standards we set in Attenborough College by being Ready, Responsible and Respectful, demonstrating that he takes genuine pride in working hard and focusing on his education.

Isabella has shown outstanding conduct so far this year! She has achieved an impressive 225 merit points so far, alongside maintaining a fantastic record of 0 behaviour points and 100% attendance. Isabella consistently upholds the high standards of by being Ready, Responsible and Respectful. She always strives to challenge herself, demonstrating her knowledge and ability to think critically and is consistently kind, caring and helpful towards others. Marta, for her outstanding diligence, focus, and caring attitude.

Marta has made a phenomenal start to secondary school, achieving 120 positive points. This incredible total reflects her proactive and focused approach to her studies, consistently producing work of the highest quality.

Marta is also a deeply caring member of COE College, demonstrating kindness and maturity beyond her years. She is a true role model whose academic commitment and positive character deserve this special recognition.

Jameson (8CO7)

Jameson has been recognised for his exceptional commitment to learning, consistently high standards of discipline, and thoughtful engagement in lessons and assemblies. He produces work of excellent quality and is a positive role model to others, reflected in his achievement of over 103 points.

Jameson has also shown outstanding dedication to Government and Politics, regularly attending the lunchtime club and being the only Year 8 student to take part in the Houses of Parliament tour and workshop, making him a highly deserving recipient of this award.

Growing Our Rewards and Recognition

We are committed to recognising our students not just for outcomes, but for the effort, progress and positive engagement they show each day. This module, we have expanded our rewards offer with two new initiatives designed to celebrate active involvement in learning.

Our new Golden Ticket reward scheme recognises students who consistently engage well in lessons and demonstrate a positive approach to learning. Each week, students who meet the criteria are entered into a prize draw, with Golden Tickets issued on Fridays across each college. Lucky winners can then take their Golden Ticket to the Success Store, where they can exchange it for a prize of their choice.

Alongside this, we have introduced the Active Participant reward to highlight students who contribute positively in lessons and make the most of learning opportunities. Together, these new rewards help ensure that effort, engagement and progress are recognised and celebrated across the academy.

A Festive Reward to End the Module

VIP S-ELFIE Experience

During the final weeks of this module, we were delighted to introduce a festive reward experience for our students, the Christmas S-ELFIE.

To recognise the effort, engagement and positive attitudes shown throughout the module, a Christmas themed S-ELFIE space was created on site, allowing selected students to enjoy taking fun, festive photos with their friends.

Students were selected through our existing Hot Chocolate Friday nominations, with all nominated students receiving a VIP S-ELFIE pass as an additional reward. It was lovely to see students enjoying this special opportunity as we approached the end of the module.

A huge thank you to Ms Pedder, who transformed the space into a wonderfully festive S-ELFIE area, complete with lights, decorations and plenty of Christmas cheer.

Planet Ice Reward Trip

We had an excellent trip out for the Module 2 Rewards Trip at Planet Ice, where 15 students were selected to attend after meeting the criteria for being an “Unsung Hero.” The students had a great time and showed fantastic growth in confidence on the ice; with the support of skating aids, they developed key skills such as balance, coordination, control and were soon skating with much more speed and confidence.

It was lovely to see how supportive and caring the students were towards one another throughout the session. Resilience was clearly on display, as regardless of how many falls they had, the students got back up and continued to challenge themselves. All students represented the school superbly and should be extremely proud of themselves.

College Christmas Card Competition

We held our Christmas Card College Competition, a fantastic lead-up to the Leigh Academy Trust competition. Every student was given the chance to put their artistic skills to practice by designing a dazzling cover for a Christmas card and the submissions were excellent and very festive!

The final results and standings are:

1st Place: Attenborough with a winning 105 points!
2nd Place: Angelou with 41 points.
3rd Place: Coe with 35 points.

We were delighted with the response to our Christmas Cake Decoration Competition, with so many fantastic entries submitted. Students showed impressive skill, creativity and real attention to detail, making it a very tough decision for our judges.

We are proud to announce Jameson as our overall winner. His design stood out for its originality and finish. We would also like to give a special mention to Ben (Year 10) and Lara (Year 8) whose entries were also extremely impressive.

Well done to everyone who took part and helped spread some festive cheer across our academy.

Year 7 students with their Christmas cards

Modern Foreign Language

Our Year 7 students have enjoyed a festive literacy activity this term by writing Christmas messages to students at our partner school in Germany. They took great care to introduce themselves, share aspects of their own lives and ask thoughtful questions about everyday life in another country.

This exchange has been a lovely way to develop cultural awareness and international links, and our students are already looking forward to receiving replies and continuing this meaningful connection.

Geography

Year 7 students finished the last module by completing their contour models as part of their learning on Topic 1: UK, Local and Maps. They worked hard to apply their understanding of map skills and physical geography, producing thoughtful and well presented models that demonstrated both progress and strong engagement with the topic.

Art & Design

Year 10 GCSE Art students visited the Courtauld Institute of Art to see the Wayne Thiebaud exhibition as part of their future Consumerism project. Viewing the work of this influential artist first hand allowed students to engage more deeply with his use of paint, colour, repetition and everyday imagery.

Seeing original artworks in person is an important part of developing artistic understanding, enabling students to observe scale, texture and technique in a way that cannot be achieved through screens or textbooks.

Students also took part in a bespoke monoprinting workshop led by the Courtauld team, giving them the opportunity to explore printmaking processes and apply these ideas to their own work. The staff at the gallery said how delighted they were to work with a group of such polite and engaged students, all of whom produced numerous studies towards their GCSE coursework. Well done Y10 Art!

John Downton Art Award

We are proud to share that Daisy J’s stunning print, Rainbow Jungle, has been selected to be part of the John Downton Art Award and Exhibition. This is a fantastic achievement and recognition of Daisy’s creativity and technical skill.

Daisy produced this multi-layered gelli-print during our lunchtime Art Club. Inspired by the shapes and details found in the autumn leaves, this print uses colour beautifully to highlight the intricate patterns of the leaves.

We are very much looking forward to seeing her work displayed as part of the exhibition and wish Daisy the very best of luck, with our fingers firmly crossed for success in her category.

English

Celebrating Sophie and Grace’s Writing Success

We are delighted to share that Sophie and Grace have had an original piece of writing selected for publication in a Young Writers anthology. This is a fantastic achievement and a real credit to their creativity, effort and confidence as writers.

Being chosen for publication means their work stood out among many entries from young people across the country. Sophie and Grace showed imagination, thoughtful use of language and a strong personal voice, which impressed the judges.

We are incredibly proud of them and look forward to seeing their work in print.

To continue celebrating a love of reading and writing, Ms Holland, our Librarian, will be running a readathon in January to help raise money for the charity Read For Good. More information will follow shortly, and sponsorship forms will be handed out for those students and staff who wish to take part.

Well done to Sophie and Grace for this brilliant accomplishment.

Extended Writing

Modules 1 and 2 have been a period of great success and progress in English Language and Literature.

Attendance at the weekly Theatre Club with Mr Smith has nearly doubled in number. Recent highlights include shows such as Frankenstein from the National Theatre and a filmic rendering William Shakespeare’ life.

Students further on in their academic journeys have been studying hard for their exams - take a look at the work from Ms. Jacobson’s intervention group, where learners are really taking ownership and pressing forward with the important GCSE revision. Special shoutouts to Leon, Lily, Jacob, Melody, Jaymelee and Maisie.

Extended writing continues to be a focus for us, and we are delighted that so many students are contributing to our drive in this - both inside and outside the classroom. A special shout-out to Quinn for the work pictured above.

A Level Fashion

Our A-Level Fashion students recently embarked on an inspiring and highly beneficial trip to London, combining a deep dive into historical design at the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum with the practical challenge of fabric sourcing at Goldhawk Road. The experience was a resounding success, offering invaluable insights for their current coursework and future portfolios.

Food Technology

Year 7 Food Shout-Out!

A huge well done to our amazing Year 7 students in Food last week who designed and created their very own couscous salads!

Students demonstrated excellent knife skills, confidently using the bridge hold and claw grip to prepare a range of fresh ingredients safely and accurately. Their creativity and presentation skills really shone through; just look at the variety of colours, patterns and designs they produced!

Our Year 10 Food Technology students recently traveled to Scandinavia in the kitchen, successfully completing a challenging practical task: creating and plating traditional Finnish Fruit Bread. This lesson was an excellent test of their technical baking skills, requiring them to handle and develop an enriched dough.

The students then moved on to the demanding skill of braiding the dough. As you can see from the photographs , the results were truly amazing!

Year 11 DT & Textiles Shout Out!

Our Year 11 Design & Technology and Textiles students have been working incredibly hard on their NEA coursework and we could not be more proud of the creativity, commitment and maturity they are showing. The quality of their design work, modelling and product development is truly impressive, with students pushing themselves to create thoughtful, user-focused solutions that genuinely meet their clients’ needs.

A huge shout out to Mia, Jaymalee, Eva, Freeya, Amelia; who are demonstrating exceptional effort, independence, and attention to detail. Their projects already show a deep understanding of the design process; from research and ideation to prototyping and evaluation.

The NEA makes up 50% of their final GCSE grade, so the excellent progress they are making now is absolutely vital. Their determination and resilience are setting them up for success and it’s been fantastic to see them take real pride in their work.

Social Sciences

Year 12 Law students had a memorable trip to London, starting at the Royal Courts of Justice where they took part in a lively mock trial that showcased their confidence and legal knowledge. They then toured the Supreme Court, gaining insight into the highest level of justice in the country. The group represented the school with maturity and pride throughout, impressing staff and guides with their enthusiasm and professionalism.

History

History Across the Key Stages

This module, students across the school have been exploring a wide range of historical periods. Year 7 focused on the Medieval period through the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine, Year 8 studied British America, and Year 9 examined 20th century dictators, developing their understanding of power, leadership and change.

A special mention to Harrison (Year 8) for outstanding learning this module, particularly for striving for excellence by redrafting and polishing work before submission.
A huge well done to Devonne and Lily (Year 11) for their excellent progress in recent mock exams, with hard work and determination leading to impressive gains.
Tag (Year 13) is also commended for delivering a confident and inspiring address during our Remembrance event. His maturity and willingness to share his career ambitions made a strong impression.

Well done to John H (Year 12) for his commitment to wider reading as part of his History A level studies.
Finally, Joseph (Year 8) is recognised for his enthusiasm for History beyond the classroom and for sharing his learning experiences with others.

PSHRE

Our Year 13 students have been taking part in the award winning KCC Young Driver and Passenger Course, which supports young people in developing safer attitudes and behaviours as future drivers and passengers.

Across the sessions, students explored key factors that contribute to road safety, including hazard perception and the limits of our vision, the impact of alcohol, drugs, mobile phones and fatigue and how speed, stopping distances and road conditions affect control. They also examined how emotions and human error influence decision making behind the wheel, using real life scenarios to understand how safer choices can be made.

Science

It has been a fantastic few weeks in Science. We’ve seen a noticeable increase in attendance at both our lunchtime support sessions and Period 6 interventions, with students showing real commitment to improving their understanding. Our Year 11 students have also been receiving their mock results, which clearly reflect the hard work and determination they have shown throughout the term. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and look forward to continuing this momentum as we move into the next stage of the year. A special mention to Leon, Freya, Devon and Jack G for their regular attendance.

Our Year 7 and Year 8 students have been busy completing their Criteria D assessments with great creativity and enthusiasm. Year 7 have been designing strategies to produce clean drinking water in a post-apocalyptic scenario, applying their knowledge of separation techniques to solve real-world survival problems. Meanwhile, Year 8 have been researching the benefits of green infrastructure and preparing persuasive presentations aimed at convincing the local community of its environmental and social value. We are incredibly impressed by the innovation and independence shown across both year groups.

Maths

Year 11 have completed their mocks so now we will be giving every student a question level analysis (QLA) of their mocks which is a brilliant tool for targeting revision. The QLA will show students which topics they have performed well in and which topics they need to revisit. This will help support students with their independent work and future revision. As teachers we will also be using the QLAs to create small intervention groups to provide further support for those students who need it.

Thank you to all students who have been attending Maths homework club on Wednesday lunchtimes, this is an open drop-in session for any student who needs any support with their homework.

Brock W: Whenever Brock needs any support or is curious about an area of Maths he is proactive on finding help, it has been brilliant to see Brock reaching out for support which we are always happy to give.

Ted W: Ted has been performing Maths which is well above where a year 10 student should currently be at, this is due to his fantastic attitude to learning and he has a fantastic approach to his methods.

Beyond the Curriculum

This module, our Advisory and Assembly programs have placed a keen focus on the IB Learner Profile attribute: Reflective.

We've engaged students in activities and assemblies designed to encourage thoughtful self-assessment and continuous personal growth. Through structured advisory discussions and engaging assembly themes, students have been prompted to:

Critically examine their learning experiences.
Identify their strengths and challenges.
Use feedback to set clear, actionable goals.

By cultivating this habit of self-awareness, we are empowering our students to take greater ownership of their education and grow into self-regulated, resilient learners.

During Digital Citizenship Week

Students explored how to be safe, respectful and responsible online. The assembly focused on netiquette, privacy, security and digital footprints, ending with students making a personal pledge to reflect on their online behaviour and act responsibly.

Developing our Understanding of AI

Building on our assembly focus on Digital Citizenship Week, our Advisory session explored the issue of artificial intelligence bias. Students considered how data and algorithms can reflect human bias, encouraging them to think more critically about the ethical impact of AI in the digital world.

Respectful Relationships

On 24 November, our Year 10 students took part in an important assembly led by PC Hills and PCSO Matthew from Kent Police. The session built on students’ current PSHRE learning around Respectful Relationships, helping to deepen their understanding of consent, sexual harassment, the law and how to be an ally for women and girls.

The assembly provided clear, real world insight into making safe and respectful choices, as well as how young people can support others. Taking place to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, the session was particularly timely and meaningful.

Anti-Bullying Week

During a recent assembly, we dedicated our focus to Anti-Bullying Week, reinforcing our school's commitment to creating a safe, inclusive and compassionate environment for everyone.

The session emphasized the importance of:

Upstanding: Empowering students to speak up and intervene safely when they witness bullying.
Empathy: Encouraging students to understand and share the feelings of others.

Reporting: Ensuring students know how and where to report incidents of bullying; for themselves or for others.

Human Rights Day

Our recent Advisory session marked Human Rights Day on the 10th December, recognising the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Students explored the principles of dignity, equality and justice, and discussed why these rights matter for everyone, everywhere, as well as their responsibilities as global citizens.

With the end of the school term and Christmas break approaching, it is important to remind students of the support they can access during their time off.

We listen to our students and take any concerns seriously. All school staff are trained in Keeping Children Safe, as well as receiving ongoing updates and training eg. online safety, Prevent, and County Lines. Children at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie can talk to any staff member regarding a concern.

A Reminder About Mobile Phone Expectations

We kindly ask for your continued support in reinforcing our mobile phone policy with your child. As part of our commitment to maintaining a focused and respectful learning environment, all mobile phones must be switched off and kept out of sight while on the academy site. Phones should remain in students’ bags throughout the school day.
