ELA

Wonders: Our reading/language arts program is based around the Wonders Reading Series. However, I do incorporate multiple resources. The goal of first grade is to become a fluent reader. We also work on comprehension at the same time. We do take reading tests usually on Fridays. (working on a new schedule for this year) The first half of the school year, I read the test orally but by the last nine weeks the students will complete them independently. I also test the students over their High Frequency Words. I send home flashcards as we are starting a new weekly unit so the students can practice them. We also take spelling tests over their spelling words. We do practice these words in school but the students will need to practice at home too. A great way to practice is to use a dry erase board. Becoming a fluent reader is so important in first grade. It is a great idea to read nightly with your kids. It is ok to reread the same book. It helps the kids to become a more fluent reader. At first, you may do most of the reading or take turns but as the year progresses your child will be the one to be reading to you! I have found that the kids like to read to a younger sibling or even to their pet!!
