Released at the end of last year, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is the singer’s latest endeavor to make a statement in the media. Directed and written by Beyoncé, the film is a standard concert film that also doubles as a documentary. It highlights Beyoncé’s journey on the RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR, from its creation to its finale in Kansas City, Missouri. Fans are able to see how much effort, detail, and time Beyoncé put into crafting her show, while also being treated to a professional recording of her highest grossing tour to date.
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé was distributed by AMC Theaters, being released on December 1st. It boasts a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has made just under $40 million at the box office. In comparison to other concert films, Renaissance is currently ranked at 6th for highest grossing. It has surpassed Katy Perry’s film, Katy Perry: Part of Me, and is on course to pass One Direction: This Is Us. However, Renaissance pales in comparison to Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which has made just about $250 million, yet Beyoncé’s film shouldn’t be considered a flop. Although the movie saw a substantial drop at the box office of 77% from its initial opening, it was able to top the domestic box office with $21 million its opening weekend. The film is also unique from other concert films, as it highlights its inception, with many behind the scenes moments that would satisfy any Beyoncé fan.
Viewers can expect to pay a higher ticket price when viewing Renaissance. The average ticket price starts at $22, however, premium tickets can cost well above $30. This upset many moviegoers, as most aren’t willing to shell out 30 dollars for one ticket. This significantly reduces the film’s audience, limiting it to individuals who are willing to pay such a high price to see Beyoncé on the big screen. As someone who doesn’t necessarily listen to Beyoncé’s music frequently, I can say that I wouldn’t want to pay that much for a movie ticket. When asking casual Beyoncé fans if they would go see the movie, most responded that it was simply too expensive to justify seeing. However, this price shouldn’t bar those who are fans of Beyoncé from going to see Renaissance. I believe that if you are a Beyoncé fan, you should see Renaissance regardless of the price. The film provides a lot of service to her fans, and it is an opportunity to relive or experience the concert for the first time again.
