Wonka directed by Paul King tells the story of how Willy Wonka came to be. It explains where his passion for chocolate-making came from and also where Oompa Loompas originated from. The movie is just under two hours long and expands on the classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that we all know and love. The movie was originally based on Roald Dahl's books, which are beloved by many. Starring Timothée Chalamet, the movie has a lot to live up to.
Unfortunately Wonka fell short in several areas for us. One of the major flaws, we thought, was the acting. The movie takes place in Victorian Age England and yet only half of the characters have British accents. The accent of the main character, Willy Wonka himself, can even be interpreted as a Southern accent at times, especially when he said “I’m making chocolate of course,”. The movie certainly does not lack imagination, however “the world of pure imagination” left us more confused than inspired. The movie features a plot line involving the “chocolate mafia” bribing the members of a church to keep a hidden chocolate vault underneath the building. This entire plot line had us questioning what is even happening. Wonka also features some major plot holes such as this. Wonka is illiterate but he’s left a note written by his mother about the secret of making good chocolate. How does she expect him to read the note if he was never taught to read? In the flashbacks we see a young Wonka and his mother making chocolate together. This begs the question, why did she not teach him how to read and write if she was literate? The movie also fails to explain what an Oompa-Loompa is and what their purpose is. The Oompa-Loompas seemed to pop up out of nowhere after Wonka conveniently forgets about stealing cocoa beans from the Oompa-Loompa land. Wonka, unfortunately, is full of plot holes that left us incredibly confused on what was happening throughout the movie.
Though Wonka has its share of questionable moments, there were enjoyable moments as well. We believe that even though the movie may be a tad confusing, there is no doubt it's entertaining. Between the singing, the colorful cinematography, and the playful storyline the movie keeps viewers entertained. The musical aspect of the movie was definitely good as it was not over the top. It had songs and dances but there were also plenty of non-musical scenes. The whimsy of the plot was one of the only reasons that we can agree the movie is worth watching. The plotline entailed crazy things such as sneaking into a zoo, a secret chocolate cartell, and even milking a giraffe. These things were definitely questionable and hard to follow but, no doubt, entertaining.
Overall Wonka was disappointing especially compared to the previous Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s. The many plot holes and mediocre acting made the movie drag. It could be a good movie for kids but overall it lacked substance and we would not watch it again.
