“Get in loser, it's play season!”; this year Steinerts stage is going to be more fetch than ever! With a fresh batch of underclassmen and a ton of new and returning members, our production team is filled with an abundance of talent. By introducing us to the world of modern musicals, Mean Girls ( high school version ) is already an excitement for everyone in the Steinert community.
Unlike most plays, Mean Girls is one of few that is based on a movie. The show follows its main character, Cady Heron, as she comes to America and experiences high school for the first time. As she tries to find her place in school, Cady is faced with various stereotypical groups of people, including the plastics. While spending more time with the plastics Cady learns that being popular isn’t necessarily the key to having a good high school experience. Mean Girls The Musical, as well as the film version, both explore the importance of being yourself and resisting peer pressure. The premise of the show is something that students can relate to. We can understand the intentions of all the characters and the things they go through during their time in high school. This sense of familiarity is what peeked many students' interest in this year's musical.
In addition to the show being very relatable, many people joined the cast simply because of the popularity of Mean Girls. This movie is one of the staples of the 2000’s, well known by many. The show's variety of characters and modern premise allows more students to be involved in the play as well. Now that auditions are over, things are set in motion and our production team can start practicing for the show in February.
When asked about Mean Girls (high school version), director Mrs. Giunta highlights, “ It seemed like it could be the perfect opportunity for us to go outside of our box of doing more traditional shows and try something new and different”. She explains how the show's variety of music and characters will create more involvement and opportunities for students. We are very optimistic and are hoping many people, even outside of our theater community, will come out to see the show. Not only is the musical a spectacle for the audience, it is also a great experience for all of those who participate in it. Being a part of the play brings students together in a fun and welcoming environment. However, cast members are challenged to lay out their all on stage. The next couple of months are filled with countless rehearsals that can be very stressful. “It is a challenge but we have the best play staff in the world and an amazing crew and orchestra so I know we will find ways to meet any challenge!!!” By the end of February, play season will have flown by, and all of our students' hard work will be shown front and center on our auditorium stage.
