The Girls Varsity Soccer Team is off to a tremendous start to their season. With a record of 9-3-1 thus far, this group of girls is a force to be reckoned with in the CVC. With eight girls in the starting lineup from last year being lost to graduation, Coach Hastings had to find a way to fill all of the spots lost, to keep the team just as successful. Luckily, the Spartans had a talented group of underclassmen who stepped up to the challenge. The defensive line for this team has been impressive this year as they have only allowed 6 goals in 13 games. Emily Hardiman has been a huge asset to the team as she has a total of 69 saves this season. #emilysabrickwall
A huge win for the girls was against Hopewell Valley. This is a long-awaited game each season as they are huge competitors within their conference. The game was scoreless after the first half and both teams were anxiously waiting for their time to score. Then early into the second half, Hopewell scored a goal off of a free kick. Steinert quickly responded with a goal scored by Reilly Klein to tie up the game. Then in the final few minutes of the game, Jasmine Ortega scored the Spartans’ second goal which gave them the win. Both goals were assisted by freshman Irene Jackman.
The girls played at Veterans Park under the lights on October 3rd, and they defeated Nottingham by the score of 4-0. On October 12th, they faced off under the lights of Vets Park again and were victorious over West Windsor Plainsboro South for senior night.
After dropping a heart-breaking OT loss to PDS last week, the lady spartans squared off against the same opponent in the first round of the Mercer County Tournament. They avenged the loss, when Riley Kleinn dropped in a shot to give the Spartans an OT win and a trip to the next round vs. one of the top teams in the country, Pennington. They fell in that match, but played strong to the end of the game.
The week ahead begins the state tournament games and the girls will continue to be challenged, but they have proven that they can take any competition that is thrown at them. The Spartans hope to have a successful postseason this year and are excited to see what the future holds.
