Following an impressive season of growth and success, the Spartans had another chance to display their skills at the brand-new Hamilton tri-meet on January 31. Organized by Steinert, West, and Nottingham, the new competition allows swimmers across the district to lightheartedly race for fun, entertainment, and maybe even bragging rights. It includes nine distinct events, giving everyone the opportunity to compete for their school. Fortunately, with several important placements, the Spartans were the ones going home with a prideful 160-126-92 victory.
In the 4 x 100 IM, Steinert placed first with a combined time of 4:38.35. Tyler Douglass finished in 1:09.25, with Sean Moore, Oscar Donis, and Kenneth Mazariegos closely following to earn the victory. Igor Chow, Julian Moulds, Kira Casler, and Anna Smithson also finished on the podium, coming in third place with a combined time of 4:51.39.
The Spartans similarly won the 4 x 50 Backstroke, with Oscar Donis, Igor Chow, Lily VanDero, and Sarah Torres having a combined time of 2:17.58. Donis led the way with a 28.86-second finish, greatly helping his group earn first place.
Steinert also dominated the 4 x 100 Relay with Justin Davis, Sean Moore, Landon Donovan, and Oscar Donis. Impressively, they finished with a combined time of 3:56.75 and a distant margin of nearly an entire minute.
In the 4 x 50 Kick w/ Kickboard, the Spartans placed first again. Lily VanDero, Mia Galan, Nevaeh Quick, and Michael Wemmer led the way, netting yet another victory for the school.
With so many impressive wins, the Steinert swimmers were able to cap off the season on a prideful note. Coach Melker shared the joy, stating, “Stepping into the role of Head Coach for this season has been such a pleasure. We decided to start an annual tri-meet tournament for our three Hamilton schools. It's a fun event at the end of the season to get the swimmers together and compete while having fun with our other Hamilton schools. All three teams put up first-place finishes in different events, and in the end, Steinert pulled through and won the first annual tournament. This season was successful but also a lot of fun. We have incredible leaders graduating, and are looking to fill our swim family so please consider trying out!” Clearly, there is a lot of passion and hard work going on behind the scenes. Let’s hope the Spartans can dominate the Hamiltonian waters yet again next year!
