Below freezing temperatures and multiple layers is something that winter track athletes deal with the entire season. Compared to other winter sports, winter track is outside on the track no matter the weather. Similarly to spring track, athletes compete in events such as the 1600 meter, 800 meter, 400 meter, 200 meter and several different relays. While the team holds practice outside, meets are held inside on a smaller, indoor track. You can usually find the team at the Toms River Bubble, where they've competed in 3 CVC meets. Not only has the team competed in Toms River, but also at the Peddie school and Jadwin Gymnasium.
Many winter track athletes have had a very successful season so far. At the Mercer County Championships, freshman Lisette Zamichieli placed third in the 800 meter with a time of 2:23.30. Over half the team finished with new personal bests at the Championships, making the meet extremely successful. At the Long and Triple Jump Championships, Senior Tyler Eloizard placed first in triple jump with a mark of 43-5.50 feet, making him the county champion. At the CVC meet at Peddie, the girls 176 meter relay team came home with a 3rd place title overall. At that meet as well, Gary Boyd placed second in high jump and Tyler Carocci placed second in shot put.
State sectionals are early February, so the varsity athletes are busy preparing for that meet. Coach Furch expressed how optimistic and happy she was with the team. She said, “A lot of people are trying new things…getting ready for the spring.” Both returning and new athletes worked hard during the season and that hard work is paying off.
