The 80th Golden Globe awards took place on January 10th, 2023. It was a night full of grateful speeches and talented winners. The Golden Globe Award are accolades given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which recognizes excellence in American and international Film and Television. This year had plenty of outstanding nominees. One of the biggest awards of the night, Best Picture- Drama, had the following nominees: Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis TAR, The Fabelmans and Top Gun: Maverick. The award went to The Fabelmans, and after seeing all of those movies, I can definitely say it was a well deserved win. Two other big moments from the night included Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan’s wins for Best actress- motion picture- musical/comedy, and best supporting actor in a motion picture. Yeoh and Quan both gave very emotional heartfelt speeches. Yeoh has been acting for forty years and finally got the recognition she deserved. She spoke on starting out as a minority in Hollywood and how since she is getting older, how she figured her acting opportunities were basically over. Quan spoke of how he was a popular child actor and just assumed he would never be able to surpass what he accomplished as a kid, but Everything Everywhere All at Once gave him that opportunity and gave him that answer. It was very obvious through the screen how grateful they both were. Other big wins in film went to The Banshees of Inisherin for Best Picture- Musical/Comedy. Austin Butler won best actor in a motion picture-drama, for his breathtaking portrayal of Elvis. His win came just days before Elvis’ daughter, Lisa Marie, sadly passed away. Cate Blanchett took home the golden globe for Best Actress- Motion picture-Drama for her nomination in TAR, which was one of her best performances yet. Steven Spielberg won the golden globe for best director for The Fabelmans, while Martin McDonagh scored one for Best Screenplay for The Banshees of Inisherin.
Guillermo Del Toro received the golden globe award for Best Picture- Animated for his rendition of Pinocchio. Onto Television, Game of Throne’s prequel, House of the Dragon, won the award for best drama series in a lineup of Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark and Severance. This category was a very tricky one, but I can say House of the Dragon definitely deserves the win. Another category with equally great nominations was Best Musical/Comedy series, the nominees were The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building and Wednesday. Abbott Elementary had a highly deserved win in that category. The White Lotus gained a Golden Globe for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture. Amanda Seyfried received the win for Best Actress in that same category for her role in The Dropout and Jennifer Coolidge also got an award in that same category for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The White Lotus. Coolidge gave a very memorable and funny speech and endlessly thanked The White Lotus writer, Mike White. In the limited series category, Evan Peters won the award for his portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer in the highly controversial Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Zendaya won in the category Best Television Actress- Drama Series for her outstanding performance in Euphoria. In that category, Kevin Costner won best actor for Yellowstone. Jeremy Allen White won Best Television Actor- Musical/Comedy series for his role in The Bear. In that category, Quinta Brunson took home the golden globe for best actress in Abbott Elementary, which she is also a writer for. Tyler James Williams won best actor in a television series for Abbott Elementary and Julia Garner won in that same category for Ozark. The Cecil B. deMille award is given to “a talented individual for their outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” via the golden globes website. This award was given to Eddie Murphy, who has had a lasting impact on Film and Television. Renowned television writer, Ryan Murphy, received the carol burnett award, which is honored to those who have made outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen. The Golden Globes were highly successful this year after not occurring last year after the HFPA made the decision to cancel the ceremony over concerns of the spread of covid-19 and because of concerns of others pointing to a boycott by top actors, producers, and others involved in film and TV. The outcome for the ceremony this year was great and all of the winners were very well deserved.
