In October, it’s all about Halloween. Most people who are looking for a good scare and a fun experience, go to Fright Fest at Six Flags, and it just so happens that a fellow Steinert Spartan can tell you all about it. David Zara, a member of the senior class, works at Great Adventure, and in this interview, you'll get an insight on what it's like to be a scare actor.
What is your job at Six Flags?
My job at Six Flags is as a scare actor.
How did you get the job?
I applied because I have always wanted to do it. I had to go through an audition process.
How challenging was the audition process?
I wouldn't say that it was challenging but it was definitely awkward.
Can you describe it (audition process)?
Me and three other people went into a room with four people judging us. They would tell us to step forward and tell us to act like zombies and victims. They also make us use props and try to scare the other guests.
How long does it take you to get ready each night?
It only takes me about 10 minutes to change, but the makeup can take up to an hour.
Have you ever broken character while on the job?
While I have been close before, I have never gotten to the point where I had to break character.
What area do you work in?
I work in district 6 (demon district) which is the area that is right in front of the Joker roller coaster.
What's your favorite part of the day?
It definitely has to be the procession and the awakening.
What is the procession and the awakening?
The procession is a parade that all of the Fright Fest characters are in where we walk through the park to the area that we do the awakening at. The awakening is a ceremony where all of the monsters are gathered in a stadium and we perform a small ritual and then we are let out into the park.
Can you describe your character and your role?
My character is a demon that lives in the underworld but comes out every night to haunt the people at Six Flags.
What is your favorite way to scare people?
When people say someone's name, me and the other demons start screaming their name, which usually sends the person running out of our area.
What has been your favorite moment at Fright Fest this year?
My favorite moments about Fright Fest are all of the times where I was able to collaborate with the other scare actors in scaring people. Those scares always end up being the best.
