Steinert’s varsity football team is stronger than ever and has been reintroducing themselves in the 2022 season. With every game, they are breaking records with the support of the Steinert community. Their current 3-2 record is a reflection of how this team works together with the guidance of head coach, Dan Caruso.
On September 3rd, Steinert began the season on their home field against Ewing, defeating them 21-13. Three touchdowns were scored in the first half, two by Connor Phox and one by Wilfred Kamara. ¨My kicker, Greg Casmir always puts it through the bars. My blockers, Jack Lambert and Colin James, are the best blockers in the CVC. We've been succeeding so much as a team because we're a family here. We all do what we gotta do. We all do our job.¨ said Connor Phox. Spartan’s defense shut down Ewing in the second half which secured the first win of the season. This game marked the beginning of a powerhouse season and truly showcased the talent and ability this team is capable of.
September 9th marked the second win of the season against Allentown. Under the lights, the Spartans defeated Allentown with a score of 20-15. Connor Phox scored the first touchdown in the 2nd quarter which placed the Spartans in a lead of 7-0. The touchdown was soon followed by star kicker Greg Casmir. Greg kicked two field goals one being 47 yards and the other being 34 yards. The 47-yarder tied a school record that has not been matched in over 19 years. “Tying the record was a really big milestone for me, all thanks to Braeden Petro and Christopher Horchuck. Being able to do what we do is just the Steinert way.” Casmir said.
The team cut it close in the fourth quarter with the score being 15-13 Allentown. Connor Phox scored a late game touchdown which secured the Spartan win of 20-15.
September 17th marked the third game of the season against West Windsor-Plainsboro South, in which the Spartans secured a tremendous win of 21-7. The first half consisted of a 56 yard touchdown run by Wilfred Kamara and a 34 yard touchdown pass by Braeden Petro to Joe Framo. ¨It was amazing to look up and see that the pass was complete to Framo, I hope to have a few more in the future¨ said Braeden Petro. Throughout the duration of the game, Steinert completed 248 rushing yards on the ground and ended the game with a 5 yard touchdown run by Wilfred Kamara.
On September 24th, Steinert and Nottingham went head to head in an intense game as both teams were undefeated in the CVC. The Battle of Klocker Road resulted in a 33-0 Nottingham win, but the Spartans are beyond optimistic for the future. ¨So far it’s been a pretty good season we started out 3-0 and the teams have been playing great. We haven’t been 3-0 in this school since I think 2001 so it was good to start out that way. We had a little bit of a road bump with this last game against Nottingham which is the best team in the county, and we lost the game but we’re still 3-1. Right now we’re looking to win the next 3, go to the playoffs, be 6-1 and hopefully win in the playoffs.¨ said head coach Dan Caruso.
With every game this team continues to showcase their ability to not only play as a team, but as a family. Their ability to utilize each teammate as an asset and learn from each other is what makes this team unparalleled. Unfortunately, Robbinsville got the best of them on Sept.30, winning 21-0, but great things lie ahead for these Spartans of the gridiron, as a multifaceted team like them will continue to adjust and adapt, doing what they need to and return to their winning ways in the games ahead.
