To our treasured 8B students...

On May 18, Dr. Trybulski shared a special video message - courtesy of the HMS staff - with all of you, and the goal of that message was to comfort and encourage you in these final days of the 2019-2020 school year.

Through a handful of voices, we all wanted you to know that - over the past nearly four months - your strength, energy, and hard work had not gone unnoticed.

We all wanted to tell you, “You got this”, because we all realized that times were getting tougher.

And we all were so worried about you.

Even the greatest champions lose their momentum, at times, and even the soundest hearts can doubt themselves. In Dr. Trybulski’s message, Mrs. Simons spoke on our behalf when she called you dragons -- each sharing your fire and taking flight in so many remarkable ways since we met you in September. Even the most powerful dragons sometimes find it hard to make it off the ground. Sometimes, they even forget their own wings.

And so we must remind them.

On Saturday, May 29, 2020, SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule carried astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken into history. After a 3:22 pm launch from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, they entered the Earth’s orbit in under ten minutes. It took them less than one day to reach the International Space Station, which sits slightly more than 200 miles above the planet and orbits at a speed of over 17,000 miles per hour, roughly twenty-two times the speed of sound.

See how far - and how fast - dragons can fly?

We, your 8B teachers, hope that you remember this whenever times get tough and you forget to shoot for the moon. As Oscar Wilde said, “Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars”.

Now that our time together has come to an end, we send you - like satellites - into the unknown. We trust that we’ve taught and treated you well, and we pray that we’ve prepared you for your infinite paths of flight.

And we dearly hope that you will, one day, return to our silly little planet to pay a visit because - of course - we still love you.

You are forever in our hearts and on our minds.

Miss you already,

The Team 8B Teachers
