The school counselor’s role is to assist in the academic, personal and social development of the student at Hunter Elementary School. One of the ways to accomplish this is by providing additional support through counseling services. Keep in mind that this does not replace outside counseling that may be needed for your child’s mental health.
Some children are offered the opportunity to participate in short term individual counseling. The sessions afford children the opportunity to receive individualized support and are scheduled at a time that will have minimal impact on academic learning. Children will have a “safe” environment where they can talk freely about their accomplishments, concerns and/or thoughts. Participation is always voluntary!
Peer Support groups provide children with an opportunity to meet with fellow classmates on a more personal level. Children will have a “safe” environment where they can talk freely about their accomplishments, concerns and/or thoughts. The groups will meet weekly during lunch for as requested by the teacher. Participation in the group is always voluntary!
Meeting with the school counselor does not take the place of therapy. If you feel that your child could benefit from therapy outside of the school setting, or needs more attention than the school counselor can provide, I would be happy to provide you with a list of resources and outside agencies.
