Dear Parents,
Welcome to the start of a new school year! We’re excited to begin the year with a strong foundation in math. This month, we’ll focus on building number sense, problem-solving strategies, and key mathematical concepts that will help set your child up for success throughout the school year.
Here’s what your child will be learning in math during September:
Kindergarten:
Counting and Number Recognition: Students will work on recognizing numbers up to 20 and counting forwards and backwards.
Basic Addition & Subtraction: We’ll begin with simple addition and subtraction using objects and five and ten frames.
Patterns and Shapes: Students will explore basic shapes and patterns, developing an understanding of symmetry and sequence.
1st Grade:
Addition and Subtraction Facts: Building fluency with addition and subtraction facts up to 10.
Place Value: Understanding tens and ones and how they combine to form numbers.
Word Problems: Applying addition and subtraction to solve simple word problems.
2nd Grade:
Place Value: Extending place value understanding to 100, and learning to compare numbers using symbols like greater than, less than, and equal to.
Addition & Subtraction Strategies: Using strategies like "counting on" and "making ten" to solve problems.
3rd Grade:
Multiplication & Division: Introduction to basic multiplication facts (up to 12) and understanding the relationship between multiplication and division.
Place Value: Expanding knowledge of place value up to thousands.
4th Grade:
Multiplication & Division: Fluency with multiplication and division facts.
Problem Solving: Using a variety of strategies to solve multi-step word problems.
5th Grade:
Decimal Operations: Introduction to decimals, including addition, subtraction, and comparing decimals.
Multiplication & Division: Fluency with multiplication and division facts.
Practice at Home: Encourage your child to practice basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) regularly. Flashcards, online games, or simply quizzing them can be fun and engaging!
