What happens if I pass a course sequence but fail the regents?
Earning the credit for the class is independent of passing the Regents examination. Students are expected to earn a certain number of credits in different areas in order to receive a high school diploma. There is also a requirement to pass the English Regents, one math Regents, one science Regents, and one social studies Regents with one additional passed Regents exam or another approved +1 option. For example, you could have (1) ELA, (2) Global History, (3) Algebra I, (4) Living Environment, and (5) US History. Regents exams you received a Waiver (WA) in the past two years fulfill these requirements.
All students will advance to a new course the following school year regardless of earning the class credit or passing an associated Regents exam. Based on passing the course and Regents exam will determine your options in math and science.
Students who do not pass the course (or failed in the fall semester) will be scheduled for summer school. Almost all of the courses 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students take at HSFI are necessary for graduation and must be made up in summer school. Not attending summer school may put your 4 year graduation plan in jeopardy.
Students who do not pass the Regents examination, but passed the course, will not be scheduled for summer school, but will have the opportunity to receive summer tutoring so they can take the Regents examination in August. Whether or not you need to pass a Regents examination you just took and failed can be complicated and you should speak with your counselor
