A few recommended lessons to get you started with Hour of Code

DANCE PARTY!!!

Looks like the Hour of Code Dance Party just might be the big hit this year!

Do this one with your students and problem solve together! Then, let them create in groups and hit all those 4 Cs! Collaborate and communicate while creating with critical thinking! Big win!

Minecraft

Do you wonder if your students who play Minecraft have ever pondered WHY things in the game work like they do? Someone programmed them to do that!

This challenge will help them explore how coding makes their game work and may just open up a world of computer science that hadn't (or maybe the have...) considered!

Looks like there is a new VOYAGE AQUATIC game for students this year!

Star Wars Hour of Code

Who ISN'T excited for the new Star Wars moving coming out in a couple weeks? Blending pop culture with coding makes for an engaging lesson in computer sciences. Click the box to the left to access the code.org page. Choose "blocks" if your students are new to coding.

If you students seem to be familiar with the block coding challenges, then choose the option on the left to show Java Script. Click here for accompanying lesson plans.

Code with Moana!

Did you do this one with your students last year? It was a hit, and it is still available! Disney has partnered with code.org for this game activity. Requires some reading, or headphones to listen to the audio cues.

This would be a good whole class activity for younger students, but after a working through the first few challenges together, older students will be ready to try it on their own, or as paired programmers!

Hour of Code/Intro to Coding HyperDoc Grades 3+

Hour of Code Hyperdoc

Share this slide presentation in Google Classroom to make a copy for each student and let them explore the slides. There is information, videos, games, and a place to try one of the tutorials.

(note: The padlet on slide 10 belongs to the creating teacher, Karly Moura. You might want to replace this with your own padlet board)
