Using doubles or tens + 1 or -1, such as 8 + 9 = (well, 8 + 8 = 16, so 8 + 9 = one more, 17)
* Subtraction strategies
Count up- start with the smallest number and count up to the larger number. (8 -5 = 6, 7, 8 = 3)
* Use fact families (If 2 + 3 = 5, then 5 – 3 = 2)
* Count back- start with the larger number and count back to the smaller number.
My students are always eager to learn “times” as they call it. They want to learn multiplication! However, addition and subtraction facts must be mastered first. All it takes is lots of practice and repetition. I know we are all pressed for time, but practicing math facts can be done on the go! Quiz your child in the car, while making dinner, or while doing the dishes…anytime is great to learn math facts!
