In our class, we will not have weekly homework to be turned in each week. Instead, our homework will be broken down as follows:
Math--A nightly review homework page will come home after each math lesson taught (example: if we complete Lesson 1.1 in class, then homework for Lesson 1.1 will come home in your child's Daily Folder that evening to be completed). THIS WILL BE THE ONLY NIGHTLY HOMEWORK YOUR CHILD WILL HAVE.
Spelling--We begin weekly Spelling Lists in Second Quarter. Three times a quarter your child will receive a new set of spelling words that teach a specific skill. At the end of that specific week, your child will be assessed over the skill taught.
Reading--Reading is HIGHLY encouraged each night (about 20 minutes). Starting off reading to your child, then working towards independent readers is a goal we have in 1st grade. I will send home a Reading Log each month. At the end of the month, your child can turn in their log to receive rewards for working hard and becoming a stronger reader!
High Frequency--We will have a new list quarterly of 40 words. I will send this list home at the beginning of each quarter for you to practice at home. Each week I will introduce 7-8 words and we will practice those words throughout the week. At the end of the quarter, students will be assessed on these 50 words.
Writing--Writing practice is also HIGHLY encouraged. Each week, your child will also have a "Weekly Writing Work" sent home starting second quarter. This will give your child practice each week of basic writing conventions, staying on topic, and learning the different writing styles we will cover throughout the year.
Our classroom management is very simple...
Your child starts out with a BLUE clip. Once your child has been given a verbal warning, he/she will be asked to move to GREEN at next offense. At next offense, student will then move to YELLOW, miss minutes of next recess and consequence form will go home. RED will follow yellow, miss minutes of next recess, consequence form will go home, and could possibly mean a visit to the office and a call home. Your child staying on BLUE or GREEN for the whole day will receive punches on their "RockStar Behavior" punchcard. Once filled, your child will receive a special trip to the treasure chest!
Yellow/Red consequence forms need to be completed, signed, and MUST be returned the next morning.
Your child will have a monthly calendar in their BLUE daily folder. If your child stays on blue, they will receive two hole punches on their ROCKSTAR BEHAVIOR punch card. If your child is on green, they will receive one punch. Once your child has filled their punch card (20 punches), they will get to pick a prize from the treasure chest!
