Vigil
The purpose of this vigil is to honor those in the military who served as a POW, prisoner of war, and for those who remain MIA, missing in action. The purpose is also to bring awareness to our community of our mission to educate students about the sacrifices made by these individuals. Finally we strived to financially support to the POW/MIA Museum at Jefferson Barracks and will do so through selling shirts and advertising their donation website.
Heartland Heroes Visit in 2021
The Heartland Heroes is a group of about 70 motorcycle riders that crossed our country from California to the Illinois and back to Missouri. They previously rode for the groups known as Run for the Wall, but the ride across our entire nation was cancelled due to COVID. This smaller group (Heartland Heroes) rode across the country with a motto of Hope, Honor, and Healing. They were bringing awareness to everyone about the sacrafices made by our POWs and those that are still MIA. The riders rode through to all buildings on campus and stopped here for lunch and an assembly. During the assembly Mrs. Shannon Spake shared her story. Her father, Dennis Pike, is still MIA to this day.
POW/MIA
By Kerrigan Blocker
When you left us, we never thought it would be the end
We expected to see you around the next bend
Although you have not returned, I’d like you to know
You’re always on my mind and hard to let go
POW-MIA you are a true hero and perhaps out there somewhere
Every night I think of you and the others and say a little prayer
One day, I hope you’ll return safe and sound
Until then, I will think of you daily until you are found

For Us
By Kathryn Lammert
For us
Sometimes in this cruel world
People leave
Sometimes in this cruel world
They don’t come back
Sometimes in this cruel world
They don’t get to say goodbye
Sometimes in this cruel world
They they get trapped
But they did it for you
All of you
So, maybe this world isn’t so cruel
They saved us
Helped us
So let’s remind ourselves
Of the things they did
For us
Because sometimes in this world
There are good people that did these things
For us
They know they might not come back
But they still went along with it
For us
September 18, 2020- Hillsboro Intermediate School's first year celebrating POW MIA Recognition Day. Students learned about the significance of the Missing Man's Table through lessons, books, and a discussion with Mr. Readnour, our school principal, during their lunch period. They were challenged to go home and share with a member of their family the symbolism of the Missing Man's Table. The students were shocked to learn about the amount of POWs in the past and of the thousands that are stil Missing in Action.
POW MIA Recognition Day serves as a kickstart for our school's coin drive to help the POW/MIA Museum at Jefferson Barracks. https://jbpow-mia.org/
