The path to recovery is unique and unpredictable.
Symptoms may not appear right after injury
Reported symptoms at home vs school may be dramatically different
Symptoms come and go depending on environment, time of day and fatigue.
Collaboration with your school's concussion management team is key to facilitating classroom accommodations to help the student recover
Day 0: Concussion incident occurs, notify the school and see a medical provider if possible.
Days 1-2: Engage in relative rest. Do regular activities like showering, easy walking, and other light social and cognitive activities. Minimize screens for 48 hours.
As soon as tolerated: Student should begin doing reading, writing, or other homework. If symptoms get significantly worse with that activity, give it more time before trying again - 24 hours wait is a good guide.
Within one week: Return to school! Bring a copy of any medical notes to school if you have them. If you have not heard from the school's concussion management team, please call us. We will put a plan in place for school supports (called an ITAP).
PE: Mild aerobic activity can speed recovery. Students with concussion can start walking in PE upon return, as long as they feel steady on their feet and overall symptoms do not get worse with movement.
Recess/Home: Avoid all activities that involve climbing, jumping, sprinting, physical contact with other students, or play involving balls.
