Play-Based Learning

What does play look like at Woodlawn?

At Woodlawn, our Kindergarten teachers work hard to provide at least an hour of uninterrupted play every day. The teachers set up this play environment with a wide variety of thought provoking areas. They often have building areas, dramatic play areas, and loose parts just to name a few. The learning environment is intentional and challenges students to develop creativity, communication, character, citizenship, critical thinking, collaborative, and literacy competencies. During this play time, students are doing some of their best learning. They are learning how to problem solve, expand their vocabulary, making sense of their world, and so much more. While the children play, the teachers are actively observing their students. They are looking for authentic ways to pull out social emotional, numeracy, literacy, and other academic learning.
