Unit: Life Systems - Growth and changes in Animals
Lesson One – Animal Growth - Comic Strip or Flipbook
In this Grade 2 STEAM activity, students will investigate the life cycle of an animal of their choice (e.g., butterfly, frog, or chicken) and represent its stages of growth and change through the creation of a comic strip. Students will observe and compare how the animal looks and behaves at different stages, using scientific vocabulary such as egg, larva, pupa, adult, growth, and change. They will apply their creativity and sequencing skills by illustrating each stage in order, adding captions or speech bubbles to explain what is happening. Through drawing, writing, and oral sharing, students will communicate their understanding of why animals grow and change, while making meaningful connections between science concepts and artistic expression.

Lesson Two - Habitat Builder
In this Grade 2 STEAM activity, Habitat Builder, students will explore how animals’ physical characteristics and adaptations help them survive in their environments, and how habitats provide food, water, shelter, and space. Students will investigate and classify animals by features such as skin covering, movement, or diet, and consider how these traits connect to the environments they live in. Using this knowledge, they will design and construct a model of a habitat for a chosen animal, ensuring it includes the resources the animal needs to survive. Through building, drawing, and explaining their models, students will also reflect on how human actions can impact animal habitats, and the importance of conservation. This activity combines science and creativity, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding through hands-on problem solving and design.
