Step 1: Privilege Explained

Privilege is a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group. It is individual, systemic, and cultural. Privilege determines not only how the world values your life, but also how much access you have to the world around you. Privilege can be structural. Most people don't think about the fact that structural privilege, by definition, is something you are born into; it isn't earned, particularly for those who are cisgender, heterosexual, white, or Christian. Everyone, even those with marginalized identities, may have some form of privilege. Therefore, it is essential to recognize in what ways you are advantaged or disadvantaged in this world. In determining your own privilege, you can then use your experience to center the voices of those who are marginalized.

Ally is a verb. As an ally you should speak up and advocate for others who do not have the same privileges that you do. To be an ally you should do the following: understand your privilege, listen, speak up- not over, make mistakes, apologize, get up, think about your intent versus your impact. When you are called out- listen, apologize, commit to making change and then move forward. When thinking about privilege and allyship together you want to use privilege to educate others, but don't speak over others or take credit for things that are not yours. Use your privilege to advocate for people who are marginalized.
