This Week's News!
November 25, 2025
Hi First Grade Families,
Welcome to our short two day week before Thanksgiving Break! We spent this week doing a lot of fun activities that go along with the holiday and are looking forward to doing more as we get into December. May you and yours have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving!
This Week's Curriculum...
PHONICS...We reviewed the blends dr and tr. Many students are still writing "ch" for the "tr" blend....so we have a chuck instead of a truck. The dr blend is also difficult to catch and many kids leave out the "r" sound in the blend. Please keep working on these blends at home.
READING...We focused on the book Balloons Over Broadway. We read the book, discussed the book and learned all about the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and how balloons were added to the parade. We picked the balloon that we would like to see the most and made a design. Then we put that design on a balloon and paraded through the kindergarten classrooms like we were a part of the Thanksgiving Parade. Thank you kindergarten teachers for allowing us to interrupt your day! You make Alward School a great place to be! See photos!
WRITING...We wrote our "on demand" story this week and tried to bring it to life! The kids had 2 days to take their story through the writing process and make it the best story it could be. I am so excited to read them!
MATH....We worked with the words equal and equivalent this week. We learned that these two words mean "has the same value". We practiced making partners for 6, 7, 9, and 10 using unifix cubes. We wrote equations for each train that we made. We practiced reading them in a special way....4+5 has the same value as 9.
SEL - All day, every day! I do not think that a day goes by where we don't focus on spreading kindness. This week, kids have been "daring" others to do things that are not appropriate at school. Our conversation consisted of do we dare others (no)? Why not (unkind to try to get them in trouble)? Do we take a dare from others (no)? Why not (because then we get in trouble and we need to be smarter than that and make better choices)? I would appreciate it if you could continue these conversations at home too, as it is a great life lesson.
