This Week's News!
February 6, 2026
We finally had a full week of school again! Yeah! And it was a busy one. While doing all of our usually learning, we also squeezed in WORLD READ ALOUD DAY and the 101 DAY OF SCHOOL. On Wednesday we met with Sylvia Chen. She is the author of Tricky Chop Sticks and Sparkles for Sunny. I read Tricky Chopsticks to the class and Ms. Chen read Sparkles for Sunny with the class. The students were able to interact with her and ask questions via Zoom. On Friday, we celebrated out 101 Day of School by...
wearing dalmatian shirts we created
playing Roll to 101 (see photos)
made words out of the letters one hundred one
created art with the number 101 (in Mrs. VanKoevering's room)
hunted for 101 numbers (in Ms. Terpstra's room)
made a fun hat (in Mrs. DeCarlo's room)
made a snack with 10 groups and 1 one
wrote about our fun day!
What we learned this week....
Phonics: We focused on the split digraph i_e. It is a split digraph as two letters make one sound, but there is one consonant letter separating the two vowel. We have practiced reading and writing words with the silent e. We practiced changing short vowel CVC words into long vowel words and discussed how the sound changed. We did sentence dictation on Thursday.
READING: We continue to read nonfiction books. We are also practicing more rules of silent -e. Soft c and soft g were this week's focus.
WRITING... We celebrate Groundhog's Day on Monday during writing time. We celebrated our how-to stories on Tuesday by picking our favorite one to share with a friend. We began nonfiction writing and are learning how to do research on our computers.
MATH.... We continue to work on Unit 5 about addition and subtraction.
SEL - We reviewed what are characteristics for being our "Best Self" at school. Kids shared words like kind, considerate, active listener, being welcoming and inviting, apologizing when we make mistakes, and following the SOAR rules (safe, own it, be respectful and responsible). Students made a new portrait and added words to their best self picture. This time we focused on what characteristic we needed/wanted to practice more. Their portraits are hanging on the wall to remind them what words they chose.
