Welcome to First Grade!
I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. I will be using this google site to communicate with your family this school year, so please take a look around by using the tabs at the top of this page. Please know this site is a "work in progress" and will change as needed.
If you scroll down the page, you will find the newsletter for the week. Each newsletter will be saved in the "past posts" tab at the top in case you ever need to review them.

This Week's News!
March 27, 2026
Hello First Grade Families,
The excitement of spring is in the air! Everyone is looking forward to warmer weather and spring break. You can see it in their bodies (more wiggles) and in their brains (less focus). As we enter the 3 day week next week, please remind your kids that it is important to follow school rules and to be respectful to others. This week was a tricky one!
What we learned this week....
PHONICS: This week we focused on the vowel team "ea". We focused on the 3 sounds that this vowel team can make with the saying Eat bread and steak. We learned the long e sound is used the most in words (eat). Then the short e sound (bread). The long a sound is used the least (steak). So when we are reading words and run into this vowel team we try the long e sound first, then short e, then long a and ask ourselves which one sounded right and made sense while reading.
READING: We are wrapping up our "Good Readers" unit. This week we reviewed that good readers pay attention to vocabulary and figure out what words mean. We focused on giving the gift of reading to others and retelling stories. We focused on putting all of our skills that we learned together and setting a goal for ourselves when reading.
WRITING... We will be wrapping up our unit on Nonfiction Writing. We have been working really hard on revising and editing our stories.
MATH.... We have been focusing on 2-D and 3-D shapes and their attributes. We know 2-D shapes are flat, made of lines/curves, have sides (#), have vertices (#). We know that 3-D shapes pop out at us, are made of faces (2-D shapes) and edges (line where faces meet), have vertices (#). They can also stack or roll. We also began talking about fractions (whole, half, fourths). We are using 2-D shapes to make them by folding paper different ways.
SEL - We have been reviewing SOARing rules in our classroom on a daily basis as students have been doing more of what they want to do instead of following simple classroom rules.
Important Dates:
Monday: LIBRARY DAY! We have most books as we missed it due to book fair and K screening.
April 2-April 10 - Spring Break
Wishing your family an AMAZING week off from school! I look forward to seeing and working with your child when we return.
Please reach out if you ever have any questions!
