This Week's News!
February 27, 2026
Hello First Grade Families,
The weather is still being unpredictable! Thank you for checking it to see when to send winter gear. Hopefully March will come in like a lion and stay that way.
March Surprise Day Purchase List - in case you are interested in purchasing something to make our day the best it can be.
Congratulations to ETHAN for being this month's SOAR Champion....DARE to CARE!
What we learned this week....
Phonics: This week we focused on long "u" using the silent e. The long "u" makes two sounds. It can say its name or it makes the sound "oo". We have worked on sorting the "u" sound each day to help kids stretch the words to hear the correct sounds.
READING: We wrapped up nonfiction reading this week. The kids have had a great time learning nonfiction text features, sharing facts, and becoming teachers of nonfiction. We will now be using the information we have learned to help us write nonfiction stories during writer's workshop.
WRITING... We have finished our first nonfiction books and talked about how to make them better. Kids have started research on their next topic.
MATH.... We finished up unit 5 and have learned a lot of different strategies for addition and subtraction. I will share assessments with you at conferences.
SEL - We have been talking about the feeling word "down". We learned that it means " sad with a lack of energy in our bodies". We had a community circle and shared stories. We talked about Picasso's blue period and drew self portriats. Down falls in the "blue" section on the mood meter.
