What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is a non-profit organization and international competition program that organizes academic-style events for middle and high school students in STEM fields like biology, chemistry, physics, technology, and engineering. Through team-based, hands-on activities and events, students develop problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience skills while exploring various science disciplines and applying real-world concepts. The competition features rotating events that change year-to-year, encouraging exploration of different scientific areas, and culminates in regional, state, and national tournaments.
How it Works
Team-Based: Students participate in teams, typically composed of up to 15 members, who divide up events to focus on different areas of science.
Diverse Events: The events cover a broad spectrum of STEM topics, including anatomy, genetics, earth science, chemistry, physics, geology, and mechanical and structural engineering.
Types of events: There are three main types of events:
Build Events: Students construct a device, such as a bridge or a helicopter, or demonstrate a gained science skill, which is then tested during the competition.
Knowledge: These are tests and activities that students complete at the event site, often focusing on testing their knowledge or skills in a particular discipline.
Combo Events: These events require students to both develope a skill/ knowledge set and then demonstrate it through expiraments, and direct application at competition.
Skill Development: Science Olympiad fosters crucial 21st-century skills, including collaboration, critical thinking, technical skills, design, and prototyping.
Year-Round Preparation: Teams prepare for tournaments throughout the year, utilizing free resources provided by the organization to learn and build their skills.
Goals and Mission
Improve STEM Education: The organization works to enhance the quality of science education for K-12 students.
Increase Interest: It aims to spark and sustain student interest in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Recognize Achievement: Science Olympiad provides recognition for outstanding achievements by both students and teachers in science education.
