Reading
In reading we are focusing on characters in our nonfiction books. We are working on studying characters feelings, actions, and words. We are also working on -r controlled vowels and adding more snap words to our word wall!
Writing:
The kids have beed doing a great job writing poems! We have written color poems, I Like poems, Haiku poems, -ing poems, I Wish poems. They have become quite the poets! We will begin fiction writing next week.
Math:
We are working on learning attributes of 2 dimensional shapes, combining different shapes to make new shapes, and learning about equal shares (fractions). We have also learned about 3 Dimensional shapes and how they can be used to make new shapes. We will take the test this week and start unit 8 next week. Unit 8 will be 2 digit addition. Ex.) 45+28=____
Ruler/Feelings:
Our next Ruler lessons will be on Community, Safety, and climate. We will talk about how others may feel in a situation and how our feelings can affect others.

We are working on r-controlled vowels (words with -er, -or, -ar). We are also studying characters in books that we read. Getting to know the characters help us to comprehend better!

We just started a writing unit on poetry! We will be reading and writing lots of different poetry!

We have been learning more vowel teams. We have been working on -igh, -ie, -ou, and -ow. We are working on being fluent readers and using expression while reading.
Writing:
We are writing small moment stories again. We will be focusing on good beginnings, including where, when, and what, details, dialogue and feelings in our stories.
Math:
The kids did great on the unit 6 test. These will be coming home soon. We are currently working on unit 7. We are learning how to tell time to the hour and half hour, shapes, and equal shares/parts.

Writing:
We have started our persuasive opinion writing. The kids are using their collections to pick their first and second favorites and to give many reasons why we feel this way. They will also be writing about if their partner agrees or disagrees with their favorite item. They will learn to revise and edit their writing.
Math:
We are reviewing this week for our unit 4 test on Wednesday. We will be testing on counting on with 10's and 1's,

Our school is starting our "One School, One Book" and will be getting some fun clues this week to get excited about the book coming home on Friday!
Reading
We will be reading fiction and nonfiction books together and practice retelling facts and important parts. With fiction books, they should be able to retell: Characters, setting, events, problem, and solution. With nonfiction books, they should be able to tell the main topic of the book and then 4- 5 facts about the topic.
Writing:
We will be finishing our nonfiction writing unit this week. We will begin opinion writing next. The kids will get a bright pink paper explaining a collection that they need to bing to school by Friday, January 7! Please bring the collections to school in a gallon size zip lock baggy. Please let me know if you need a bag or have any questions about this!
Math:
In math we are working on comparing 2 digit numbers, adding 10's and 1's to numbers, mixed addition with tens and ones, and adding a one digit number to a 2 digit number.

Writing:
We are working on writing our non fiction informational books. The kids researched their animal and are writing facts including fun facts, food, shelter, body covering, and drawing a diagram. They are working hard on this and they are turning out great. The kids will continue to write these books until Christmas break.
Math:
In math we are working on teen addition, adding doubles, representing 2 digit numbers and tens and ones, adding 2 and one digit numbers together.
Ruler/Feelings:
We are learning about the feeling of furious. We will talk about what it means, what might make us feel this way, and strategies to help us when we experiencing this feeling.

We have finished learning about the mood meter and the four basic feelings associated with colors (calm/green, happy/yellow, sad/blue, mad/red). We will be starting Unit 4 about feeling "energetic". We are working how "How To" writing. The kids have written many stories together such as how to make smores, root beer floats, carve pumpkins, and wrap presents. The kids did an organizer of things they know how to do. They will begin writing their own How To writings next week!
Math:
In unit 3 we are working on finding unknown partners in addition equations. For ex.) 6 + ___ = 10

We are also becoming word detectives and solving tricky words right away, looking closely at words from start to end, using our reading strategy animal helpers, and doing a slow check on tricky words.

We have finished our first small unit writing unit. You will see lots of small moment writing coming home this week. We will begin a unit on "How To" writing this week.

This week we are learning Skippy the Frog reading strategy. This is where the reader skips the unknown word, reads on, then goes back to the beginning of the sentences. We will review the reading strategies for tricky words this week and learn how to retell stories.
Writing:
We are doing a study of the author Mo Willems this week. We are learning authors craft and how we can incorporate what Mo Willems does as an author into our own writing.
Math:
We are solving math equations this week by learning how to count on from the bigger number. We can do this by using our fingers, making dots, or pirate scooping the big number and counting on.

We have been learning strategies to help ourselves when we come to tricky words. Chunky Monkey (looking for chunks or parts of the word we know), Eagle Eye (checking the picture for clues), Lips the Fish (getting our lips ready for the first sound), Stretchy Snake (stretch our the sounds slowly).
Writing:
We continue to work on small moment writing where we are learning about 5 star sentences. Making sure our sentences: Start with a capital letter, end with a punctuation mark, neat handwriting, finger spaces, and snap/word wall words spelled correctly.
Math:
The kids did fantastic on our first math test! We began unit 2 this week. We are learning addition strategies for solving number stories and how to write addition equations.

Tuesday@ 7 pm, we will be hosting the first Alward PTC meeting of the year. We are encouraging all families to come out and see what amazing things will be happening at Alward this year. We are also looking to gain new volunteers to help with fun events going on at Alward. The classroom with the most parent representation will win a pizza party! Parents, make sure you sign in when you come. This will be a true OPEN HOUSE style. You are welcome to come and go as you please. There will be booths around to see what each committee does and how to help. No time or interest in running a committee or event? NO PROBLEM. You are welcome to volunteer for one thing at a time. In addition, there are opportunities for in-person volunteering or donations. Please park in the FRONT of the building. Masks are encouraged but optional as this is an after-school event. We are practicing rereading books to notice more details, We are practicing reading in phrases (scooping up words) rather than word by word, and using pictures to help with tricky words.

In writers workshop, the kids are thinking about small moments in their lives to write about. We are working on reading our writing like we read books, unfreezing our characters and making them talk and move, and making our characters think and feel.
Math:
In math, we are learning number partners of numbers up to 10! We are learning these with number cards, stair steps, math mountains, and number trains. We will be taking our first math test on Thursday this week. You can help your child by reviewing partners of numbers up to 10!

Turn in math homework each week by Thursdays. The first math homework will be given this Thursday. The homework is based off things we have done in class so your child should know how to do this.

Reading:
I am in the process of reading with each individual child to find out their reading level at the beginning of first grade. In the classroom we are busy learning how to set reading goals and how to read to self during readers workshop time.
Writing:
In writers workshop, the kids are thinking about small moments in their lives to write about. They think, sketch, write. We are also working on adding the 3 W's in our writing (Who, Where, What), and learning to stretch words out to spell.
Math:
In math, we are learning number partners of numbers up to 9! We are learning these with number cards, stair steps, math mountains, and number trains.
