2nd Grade Compositions (April 2023)

Park 2nd Grade Students wrote compositions with their classes and created a rhythmic poem (rap) using the program Garage Band. Each class wrote the poem using a silly topic and thinking about rhyming words. Next they found music instrument loops inside of garage band (mac computer program) that seemed to fit their poem best. We arranged the loops within the program so there was room for kids to record their voices doing the rhythmic poem (rap). Students recorded the rap and we added group and extra sound samples. We even added effects! Click below to hear their songs!

All Park students K-5 grades played Music Olympic games to review music concepts

Park 5th Grade Students prepared and recorded a "farewell" song. We were not sure if we would be able to perform it for their graduation program, so we made a recording of each class and one of the combined 5th grade classes. The recordings are posted below. We were thrilled to learn that we would be allowed to perform the song for our parents and grandparents!!
It is called, "Old Irish Blessing."

Here are the words:

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rain fall soft upon your fields.

Until we meet again....
May you live well in the heart of your home
until we meet again.

April, 2021:

Park and Bauer Elementary 2nd grade students composed a rap song as a class.
These are the steps they took:

1. Wrote the poem and any supporting words.
2. Used the program garage band to select the music from some loops available and recorded their own voices in multiple tracks.
3. Edited the sounds by dragging them and overlapping them in the timeline, and by adjusting the EQ and adding different sound effects.

Here are the classes finished product. Enjoy!

March 2021 Highlights:

Kindergarten students have been using movement and music with duple and triple meter. They repeat the leader (sometimes individuals are the leader) on songs and solfege pitches. We play games, do dances and read books together to experience more about music. There is an importance placed on teamwork and expressing their individual thoughts.

1st Grade students have been experiencing music through boomwhackers and body percussion. They learn pitch and rhythm, focus and control, individual and teamwork. It is challenging and fun to play their instrument at the correct time to fit into the music plan.

2nd Grade students are making a rap as a class. They record their own voices and add music loops/sound effects found within the program garage band. As they are finished soon, we will post them here.

3rd Grade students just finished inventing new instruments using the characteristics of orchestra instruments they have been discovering. Some of them have built their instrument out of household materials to see if it works. We have discussed sound vibration and how that vibration starts, resonates and travels through the air.

4th Grade students are learning about music and movement for a virtual performance that they will soon experience through a program called link up. They are also learning to play their recorder through the recorder Karate curriculum.

5th Grade students are preparing for the Grand Rapids Symphony virtual performance. They are also learning a Ukulele farewell song (they sing and play) to be recorded for their 5th grade recognition at the end of the school year.

February, 2021:
