The end of the year is quickly approaching! This is an exciting time of year for our students and families. Our 8th graders are preparing to complete their middle school years and enter high school, and our 6th graders will be the last group of 6th graders at BMS. As the year comes to a close, it is always so fun to see the relationships that have been built between students and staff, and I am proud to serve this amazing community! As a token to our students and families, our Eagles United student group asked teachers to pick 1-2 students from their day that inspire them. Please enjoy the premiere of the Eagles United Student Recognition Video.
We are fortunate to have so many students who model and demonstrate respect at our school. Listening and following directions given by staff, disagreeing the right way with a classmate, and being gracious or humble in situations where tensions are high are just a few examples of how students show respect. Most of the current behavior referrals to our office deal directly with respect, or I should say, lack of respect. Online or social media platforms have not helped the preadolescent students we work with navigate peer conflict correctly or appropriately. Please continue those coaching conversations at home with your child and help them navigate. We are almost to the end of the year, and we want your students to have a great finish to the year!
On behalf of our entire staff, I’d like to thank our parents for partnering with us during these crucial middle school years. We pride ourself on being a school that is responsive to both student and parent needs. I encourage you to reach out to me or any of our staff members to share an idea, suggestion, comment, concern, or praise.
Please look for one more newsletter on June 2, 2023 and we will have a summer newsletter in mid to late June.
Fire up, Go Eagles!
As we continue to expand our efforts to address students' social and emotional needs, this spring we will again implement the use of an anonymous Social/Emotional/Behavioral Screener. Student-level responses will only be shared with staff and administrators who have an educational interest. The screener is compliant with HIPAA and FERPA and will include instructions for students that speak to confidentiality and mandated reporting guidelines. A copy of the screener can be found on the HPS website (linked HERE).
Parents who wish to opt their child(ren) out of the screener should complete the following Google Form linked HERE by Tuesday, May 9 at 11:59 pm. Please note: if you already completed this opt-out form in the fall, you do not need to fill it out again.
The 11-question screener is scheduled to be given to students during 4th hour/homeroom on May 11, 2023.

Please check out the exciting updates coming from the Jenison/Hudsonville Food Service department.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 to 24. Sometimes students' struggles can be underestimated because of their age. Recently, the State of Michigan passed House Bill 5482 which requires all students in grades 6-12 have the National Suicide Prevention Hotline number printed on their student IDs as a step to support students in need of mental health support. You will notice this information on your student's school ID. Student IDs will look similar to the one pictured here. Please visit the link provided to House Bill 5482 to seek clarity about the law, and feel free to reach out with any questions.
Monthly updates will be communicated and can be accessed on the General News & Info page. Be sure to follow our social media pages for updates as well. Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas throughout the 2022-2023 school year!
