Accelerated Credit Courses

Any course taken for the first time at an accelerated pace to award initial credit. All accelerated original credit courses will be taught virtually this summer.

Cost:

Payment can be made via Skyward for credit/debit cards. Checks and money orders can be mailed to the high school C/O to Kelly Moeller. Checks and money orders should be made out to HPHS Summer School.

PreAp Latin 3

  • Prerequisite: Students MUST have received credit in PreAP Latin 2

  • Grades: 10, 11, 12

This course will be taught virtually this summer.

Accelerated Original Credit: Latin III PAP continues students’ exposure to authentic Latin, including both prose and poetry. There will be an emphasis on reading various Roman authors, so students who wish to take this course should consider themselves proficient at reading Latin. The story line includes the Emperor Domitian in the first semester. The second semester introduces Pliny, Martial, Cicero, Caesar, Tacitus, Vergil, Ovid and Catullus. This course is for the student who enjoys Latin and wants a good preparation for AP Latin.

Spanish 3

This course will be taught virtually this summer.

Accelerated Original Credit: This course focuses on the Interpretive, Interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication which include understanding of print and audio material, speaking and writing exchanges with another person, and presentations in written and spoken formats. It includes a review of previous grammar concepts and an introduction to advanced grammatical structures, vocabulary building strategies, and cultural background. At the end of the course the student will be able to reach the ACTFL proficiency levels of Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid. This means the students will be able to participate in conversations and maintain social interactions about familiar topics in everyday situations using a series of simple sentences with supporting details. The class will be conducted mainly in Spanish with a student speaking goal of 90% Spanish.

TAG Professional Communication (Speech)

This course will be taught virtually this summer.

Accelerated Original Credit: This course is open to the Talented and Gifted students only. This one-semester course will approach speech from a practical, applicable point of view, meeting each of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills requirements as established by the Texas Education Agency. The format of the class will be that of a legislative body within which the students organize the body, write the by-laws for the body (based upon various traditional organizational methods as in Robert’s Rules of Order), elect the leaders of the body, pass legislation for the body, and dissolve the body at the end of the semester. These activities will be accomplished through the traditional speech skills of critical thinking, organization, research, parliamentary procedure, public address, extemporaneous speaking, interpretation, listening, questioning and answering, protocol, legislative debate, problem solving and ethical decision making.

Geometry

This course will be taught virtually this summer.

Accelerated Original Credit: This course emphasizes primarily plane geometry but includes space and coordinate geometry. Formal geometric proof is emphasized. Algebraic concepts will be thoroughly integrated into the course. Algebra II is the next course.

This course is intended for highly motivated, self disciplined students who have extremely strong Algebra I skills. Students will be required to take a pre-test prior to enrollment in the course.
