- A highly structured, transitional Tier 3 intervention providing emotional (clinical) and academic support
- A dedicated space at HMS for students to receive school based counseling and complete work to get caught up
- Available to provide family support and engagement opportunities
- Able to work with community stakeholders
- A team approach

- Individual students will be identified by an in-school committee
- An entry meeting will take place with student, parent/guardian, school counselor, other supports
- Progress meeting mid-way through STAR (~ 4 weeks)
- Weekly updates to parent/guardian (email, call, etc.)
- Exit meeting with accomplishments and growth celebrated

Students must be registered at Haviland Middle School. Appropriately identified students should be brought to the attention of their respective school counselor by either a teacher, staff member or other referral source

Students may be discharged from a higher level of care (for example: inpatient or partial hospitalization) OR have had an extended absence from school due to mental health related concerns

Students are assessed to be appropriate for a short-term reentry program. This includes a willingness to participate in individualized STAR supports and attend school regularly

STAR Clinical Coordinator - Ms. Marla Sherman, LCSW. I am a school social worker and have been with the HPCSD since 2007. I have a Masters degree in Social Work and hold NYS licenses in Clinical Social Work and School Social Work. I did my graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Michigan. My approach is strengths-based and trauma sensitive; I am trained to assess and work with students in ways that foster growth, positive change and resilience. I help students identify coping skills tailored to their needs and work with families to identify resources. In my free time I enjoy being with family and friends as well as reading, writing, hiking, listening to music and playing pickleball. STAR Academic Coordinator - Miss Brittany Pagan. I am a Behavioral Teaching Assistant and have been with the HPSCD since 2016. My focus has been in a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) classroom at Violet Avenue School. I support students with diverse needs, including those impacted by trauma. My role has centered on fostering positive relationships, implementing strategies and creating a supportive environment that encourages emotional growth and academic success. I look forward to bringing my experience, energy, and passion for student growth to the Haviland community and making a positive impact. In my free time I enjoy exploring places and experiencing new things. I especially love spending time in the mountains, and I play pool as a fun and relaxing hobby. HMS STAR aims to provide coping skills, regulation strategies, build resiliency
and give students the tools necessary to persevere through challenging
situations and successfully transition to their classrooms.
The STAR program is a stop on the journey, not the destination.
