Syllabus/Course Outline
Course Overview
AIS Reading provides eligible students with small group, supplemental reading instruction. It is intended to assist students in developing skills needed to meet or exceed grade level expectations. Targeted instruction will be provided to meet the needs of each student.
Course Objectives
By the end of this class, your child will be able to:
apply decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies when reading.
respond to reading through writing.
Learning Management System
All students will be enrolled in Google Classroom as the learning management system for in-class, hybrid, and/or remote learning. Parents and/or guardians who provide teachers with their email are able to receive email summaries and updates on their child’s progress.
Teacher Bio
My name is Jennifer Turner, and I grew up in Hornell, NY. I live in Hyde Park with my husband and our two children. We have a dog named Fonzie and two cats - Petey and Oreo. I love to read, hike, and spend time with my family - especially when it's GAME NIGHT! I graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2002 with a BS in Elementary Education and again in 2003 with a MS in Education (Reading Specialist).
Logistics

Synchronous video conferencing sessions will take place at a scheduled time to be determined with the parent/guardian. These sessions will be scheduled during the school day but will not interfere with classroom synchronous instruction.

Friday
Assignments for the week will be due by 11:00 PM.
Monday - Friday
Virtual office hours from 3:00 PM to 3:40 PM.

Remote Weekly Calendar
Our calendar is currently TBD. Parents/guardians will be contacted with a day/time for synchronous sessions. These sessions will be conducted during school hours but will not interfere with classroom synchronous instruction.
Hybrid Weekly Calendar
Our calendar is currently TBD. Parents/guardians will be contacted with a day/time for synchronous sessions. These sessions will be conducted during school hours, on days that students are remote, and will not interfere with classroom in-person or synchronous instruction.

Class Announcements & Daily Agenda
Class announcements, daily agenda, and assignments will be posted in Google Classroom. You will see these items in the “stream”. You can also find assignments in “classwork”.

When writing a message, please follow the expectations below:
Include your name/child’s name and subject of the message.
Note: It may take up to 24 hours to receive a reply during the week and 48 hours on the weekend.
General Questions
If you have a question about the course or an assignment, I encourage you to post your question in the Google Classroom “stream.” The stream is visible to the entire class community, so I encourage you to both ask and answer questions there.
Online Discussions
Online discussions are an opportunity for you to interact with and learn from your peers. The class will regularly engage in conversations about the course content. You may receive credit for your participation in these academic discussions.
You are expected to post thoughtful, respectful, and well-written responses to the discussion questions and reply thoughtfully to at least two other students per discussion. Off-topic or inappropriate posts will be removed and, if warranted, parent contact will be made.

Participation in our Google Classroom and synchronous sessions will be the same as participating during in-person learning. Students will be expected to:
read daily.
try their best.
be actively engaged in lessons.
complete assignments weekly.
ask questions if help is needed.
Participation in this class is vital for reading growth.

You will need the following for this course:
Chrome book: If you are a student in grades K - 5, the District Chromebook should remain at home.
Paper, pencil
White board/ white board marker (if you have one)
Possible magnetic letters or letter cards
📝 Grading Policy
AIS Reading is not a graded course. Students will receive specific feedback on assignments and reading behaviors. Progress toward goals will be reported quarterly.
Grading practices will follow a standards-based framework designed to provide direct feedback regarding students’ mastery of course content/specific goals.
Grading practices and guidelines will align with the outcomes of the course and the State’s learning standards.
💡Virtual Classroom Meeting Norms
Our meeting room is our space so we keep the link private.
All comments made in the chat should be positive and productive.
Use appropriate language at all times.
Be sure to follow the dress code when we are meeting virtually.
We never take a picture or record anyone without permission.
Video is optional: (you may leave your screen off).
When someone is speaking please give them your full attention.
We mute ourselves when not speaking so no one hears background noise.
The teacher will be the last person to leave the Meet. Students should never attend a Meet without a teacher present.
🙋🏻♀️ Attendance Policy
Daily attendance will be taken in eSchoolData, our student management system, based on the required daily scheduled student contact and engagement.
Synchronous attendance will be taken during those sessions or via a virtual daily attendance question that is posted in Google Classroom.
Asynchronous attendance will be taken through a virtual daily attendance question that is posted in Google Classroom.
Students will be marked present if they respond to the daily attendance question within a 24 hour time period.
Contact with the families may be made daily to determine reasons for absence and needs or barriers the student may have to participate in daily lessons.
