⛱️Summer reading is critical for maintaining and improving children's literacy skills, preventing summer learning loss, and fostering a love for reading. By engaging in regular reading throughout the summer, children can retain their reading abilities, expand their vocabulary, and enhance their understanding of language.

🎁This year, to encourage our OWLS to keep reading all summer, Ralph R Smith Elementary is sending each student home with an awesome literary gift!
Each student will be given a package with 10 books to read over the summer. These books are theirs to keep. In this package is also a workbook and a Reading Journal. These items have been included to assist families and encourage student effort to keep up their reading and writing skills.
Here's all students have to do:
Read, read, read all summer long at least 20 minutes each day.
Log the books you read in your Summer Reading Journal.
Turn in the journal to your RRS librarian, Mrs. Webb, in September when we return to school.
That's it! Just 3 steps and you'll join other Summer Reading Friends at a special celebration at school in September!
Students have the option of completing activities in the work book and the prompts in the Reading Journal to further build on their hard-earned comprehension and writing skills.
If you misplace your journal, don't worry. We've got you covered. Below you will find links to our Family Summer Reading Letter and the grade-specific Reading Journals. These journals may be reprinted if needed.
We hope you have a great summer and enjoy your books! See you in September!
