A Parent’s Guide
to Understanding
the LLI Program
Introduction
At RRS, we understand that your child comes to us with unique interests, experiences and learning styles. Our goal is to support and motivate him or her in the best possible way. We also encourage you to partner with us to give your child the most successful learning experience possible.
Some children may need additional instruction to help them become more successful readers. A program called the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) can do that. Please read the following to learn more about how this program can help your child meet grade-level expectations.
LLI: Leveled Literacy Intervention Lessons
Your child has been selected to be in an LLI group for 30 minutes a day so that he/she will benefit from the program's intensive supplemental instruction. Your child will still be getting reading instruction in the classroom.
LLI lessons focus on the needs of individuals. To help them reach their full potential, they learn in a small group setting. Everyday, they read a new book, reread familiar books, do word work/phonics, and writing. Oral reading records and data are recorded to track your child's progress.
Your child's progress will be shared with the classroom teacher on a regular basis.
Why LLI?
The Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention program is a highly acclaimed, researched-based reading program that is used in classrooms across the nation.
Our goal is to have your child reading on grade level. Sometimes, regular classroom instruction is not always enough. LLI lessons are designed to provide direct, yet fun, supplemental instruction for those who need it. The primary objective of this program is to increase your child's reading level with daily, systematic instruction.
Take-Home Books
Your child will bring home a book in a brightly colored bag each night. Have your child read it to you. If everyone is busy, your child can read to a brother, sister, or even a pet! You will also see a parent letter included in the bag. It is crucial that the bag and book(s) are sent back to school with your child each day.
Things You Can Do At Home
Listen to your child read his/her take-home book.
Read with your child daily.
Discuss the stories together.
"Echo-read": Ask your child to repeat after you as you read.
Read stories with repetitive phrases, and reread leaving out words for your child to read.
Look for familiar letters and words as you read together.
Practice rhyming words together.
Discuss the stories together.
Read labels and signs together.
Clap word parts together. Ex: Clap the word "monkey". Ask your child how many syllables the word has.
Use magnetic letters to form words on your refrigerator.
