Syllabus
What we will be learning in third grade:
Reading:
Building a Reading Life --> important reading practices, checking for understanding, solving harder words, reading often and responding to our reading, engaging in conversations around texts
Reading for Information --> understanding text features and how non-fiction is organized, finding main idea and supporting details, distinguishing between fact and opinion, comparing and contrasting information
Character Studies --> analyzing character traits and motives, understanding patterns in how characters resolve problems and act, looking at story mountains to learn about problems and solutions in texts
Research Clubs --> this is usually embedded into our non-fiction writing unit. This unit focuses on reading for facts/researching a topic.
Writing :
Narrative -- > writing stories about our own lives, stretching out one small moment, making our writing interesting, writing good leads and conclusions
Writing Information Books --> including text features into our writing, doing research and taking notes
Opinion/Persuasive Writing --> trying to convince others to agree with our opinion, backing up our opinion with reasons and examples
Math:
BY THE END of 3rd GRADE: Your child should know all of their multiplication facts (sets 0-9).
Major Concepts --> multiplication, division, fractions and solving word problems
Other concepts--> measurement, geometry and collecting data/graphing
Social Studies:
Understanding maps and geography
Countries and cultures around the world
Science:
Force and Patterns in Motion
Fossils and Understanding Ecosystems
Weather and Climate
Inheritance and Variation of Traits (Butterfly life cycles)
