Over the last few days, I've learned twice as much as I already knew when it comes to the ocean. After watching Chasing Coral I was amazed to see just how much global warming impacts a majority of our ocean. Going on this field trip has allowed me to further expand my knowledge on sea turtles as well. I’ve always been fond of marine life but with these new experiences, I've become even more interested in studying marine life. Being with sea turtles allowed me to see first hand how to take measurements and learn about their life cycle.

2. Investigating the projects…

   1. What mission (or goal) does each project have (Chasing Coral movie’s mission and Malama Honu’s mission)?

Chasing Coral is more prominently focused on how global warming is affecting our world’s coral reefs and what we can do to inform the public while the Malama Honu mission is more about making sure the number of sea turtles is going up when it comes to their population.

2. What is the “need” that this mission is meeting?

Chasing Coral’s need is simply the attention of the public. Due to the coral bleaching happening so fast, most of our world is oblivious as to what’s happening. The Malama Honu mission’s need is to make sure these turtles grow up to have a fulfilling life.

3. Do you feel that the organization is effectively meeting its goals (or mission)? Include evidence to support your claim.

I do. Given that both groups are working hard at making a change for the world, they are already steps ahead of almost everyone else who are oblivious to what’s happening in our oceans. Both groups have also had positive changes in their actions such as Malama Honu having more turtles survive when getting sent free after a few years rather than if they were set free at birth (I think the numbers are now ¾ turtles survive?).

Reflecting on my pitch process, i think it went fairly well. I was given good constructive feedback on how to improve my project but mostly in small ways where it seemed that for the most part i was on track to have a good capstone completed by March. With this feedback, i think i'll be able to move forward in a way that relates to the needs and questions that people may have about my capstone after all.
