My name is Alek Kaune, a highschool senior who currently lives on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. I originally moved here from the San Francisco Bay Area of California when I was fourteen years-old, leaving the only place I had ever lived, and where most of my friends and family were located. We decided to move to attend Hawaiʻi Preparatory Academy (HPA), and I admit, we essentially were just like tourists for a while. However, after living here for four years, all of my immediate family members and I have completely changed. This island, from its people, ʻaina (land), and overall community has shifted my entire view of who I am, my perspective on the world, and helped educate me more than I can ever imagine about Hawaiʻi and Oceania as a whole, with still so much I wish I could learn.
Hawaiʻi has done so much for me, and it injures me deeply to see how most people on the planet see it as: perfect paradise. This perception deals only further damage to the island nation that has faced so many dire issues affecting all aspects of life for the past few centuries. I have always been a fan of movies and television, and it imprinted onto me my basic understanding of the world as a child. I personally did believe Hawaiʻi was a tropical haven, because I had no other available source of reference besides what was portrayed in the media. In fact, a good portion of my friends and family still believe it is nothing more than a vacation hotspot, even after I have shared my stories and experiences of living on the island daily. Through this project, I want to emphasize how dangerous misrepresentation can truly be, and highlight those who have helped change the narrative, and their suggestions for future action. Hawaiʻi has done so much for me, and it is only right I try to do something in return before I head off into the next chapter of my life ahead of me.
